October 31, 201312 yr Quantifying it with stats is far better than the eye test, but nobody is saying that the eye test doesn't help. Sure you need to watch guys too to make a fair judgement but the stats are far better than people want to admit. They're not perfect but they're pretty good. I agree. The other thing is you can't look at stats in a vacuum. For example, you hear a team only lost one game when they led after the 8th inning. That sounds incredible. Then you find out there are 9 other teams with the same stat. You always have to look how a stat compares to others. I also say there is no one stat that can be used to make a complete judgment on a player.
October 31, 201312 yr I checked out DRS and I still see a flaw. There is still a dependence on the location and type of ball hit toward the defensive player. If it happens that very few balls get hit in the right vector and speed then that will impact the DRS and the defensive player has no control over it. Like almost all stats, you can't just pin a judgment of a player down to one number. You have to factor in all the stats and yes, the eye test, to judge who gets a gold glove. Nothing is going to be 100% flawless. DRS is a much better measure of a player's defensive prowess than the eye test, or POs, TC, and Assists though. dWAR, DRS, and rF are the best three measures. They encompass more variables than anything else. Anytime you can add more (relevant) variables to the mix, you're getting a much truer reading on the end result.

BP is best second basemen defensively in the league no question. Alwasys worry about stats. Just watch the games, pretty easy.

If you're going to go by the eye test, I see no way anyone can make a definitive statement when they don't watch everyone as frequently.
