Grant County Football

The defense does need some work, but when the offense consistently goes three and out the defense gets demoralized. I think the defense knows if they give up 2 touchdowns the game is over. The best way to keep an offense from scoring is to keep them on the sidelines but the GC offense consistently puts their defense in bad situations. I believe the team is averaging around 13 pts a game, you won't win many games with that average. Now the defense has given up over 40 a game. If you have a defense that has trouble stopping the other team you have 2 options. First you use ball control to minimize the other teams offensive opportunities or you can try to out score them in a shoot out. Right now Grant is not capable of getting in a shoot out so they may want to try ball control.

To blame the offense for the defensive woes just doesn't make sense.

Sure the defense can get demoralized but shouldn't after just 5 mins into the game.

They can get demoralized in the 2nd half, not the 2nd series.

The offense is scoring 13 points a game, not a lot, but still they are scoring. You said the defense is ggiving up 40 a game, how in the world do you expect to win anything when you give up 40 points a game?

Don't you think it's mre demoralizing to your offense when they are always multiple scores down? you can't have ball control offense when you are 20+ pts down, you have to try and score often.

I'd be interested in a break down of how many points given up by qtr. I have a bad feeling Grant givees most of their points up early, too early for the defense to already be demoralized by the offense.

Hellbird: not trying to be a jerk but just a honest question. Do you or have you ever coached? The other question would be how many of Grants games have you watched?

You are correct when you can't stop the other team it's an issue. When you can't score it's an issue. My comment about the number of coaches you need is not a knock on the HC. It's a legit issue depending on the system you run. It's a statement about the current staffing limitations.

Grant has gone pretty much two platoon with 6 total coaches. That is not easy. Everyone of those 6 better be solid. Now my definition of solid and someone else's might be very different. I have a pretty high standard there.

I never said anything about the number of coaches. Not sure what your trying to say there because I agree with you about the coaches.

As far as have I ever coached? Yes, in several sports but only one sport did I ever coach with my son oon the team and that was Baseball. I coached both Football and Soccer when I lived in South Carolina. Long before my kids were old enough to play. I coached Baseball here and coached softball.

My best friend has a son who plays for Grant and seen several games the last couple years, only 4 Varsity over the last 2 years but mostly JV games because I can see them when Cooper JV plays away and because hhis son played JV until recently when he was promoted to starter on varsity.

So again, why ask me about the coaching and the numbers needed, I don't think I ever said anything about the number of coaches.

I bring it up because you made mention it doesn't matter what type of offense you run. It is my belief that it does matter the number of coaches you have when it relates to the things you try to do on offense. I also believe it effects what you can do on defense. If I'm a 425 team and depending on how I run that 425 the number of position coaches I need and their level of knowledge will vary. If I run a 44 cov 3 I can get by with less.

When I asked about coaching I was talking football. Our different point of views could of come from that or just in general different coaching philosophies. Having to get back on the field after 2 minutes is tough on a defense. Just like its tough on an offense if the defense can't get off the field or gives up points. Been on both sides of that one.

I've watched many a grant co game and pretty much all of them over the last few years. I've watched a few of them a number of times. My pint of view is not a disgruntled parent in the stands. For the record I don't have a son on the team and in fact I don't have children.

When i said it doesn't matter what offense you run, i didn't mean one offense over another etc. I was refering to you could have the Denver Broncos offense and players but it doesn't matter when your can't stop anyone. giving up 40 points a game, there is no offense that can win every week overcoming that. that is what I meant.

with that all said, I still never questioned you about the number of coaches needed for different schemes. Not sure where that came from. If I had a say I'd want on offense side of the ball alone, 5 coaches. 4 being position coaches and a coordinator. Same on defense no matter what scheme you are running, I always thought it iimportant to have a coach for each position whether you are playing a 425 or yyour 44 cover 3. Position coaches are needed to teach 1. technique and 2. teach the role in each defense etc. they will be playing. If I was a HC I would love to have 10 coaches, or even 11 if I could get by with it for special teams. I could get by with 4 on defense no matter what scheme you are running.

I agree that if you are giving up large amounts of points it is hard. Grant is playing a number of young guys on both sides of the ball. It is also very hard on a defense to know they can't screw up. If they do then they put the game outside their offense's reach.

The fact is they are struggling on both sides of the ball for a number of different reasons and in a number of different ways. We are also talking about 15-18 year olds. No matter who coaches them they will make mistakes. For some of these players this is the 4th coaching staff they've had. 3 different offense and 3 different defenses at least. Add in the fact that the last few years have been rough and it is not an ideal recipe for success.

They a very good young two classes. They had a very productive off season last year though I wish they kept the speed machine. There are other issues that we'll have to see if those issues change.

Me bringing up the number of coaches goes back to you saying the offense isn't the problem. My point was unless you have 3 solid coaches you're going to have a very very hard time getting it to work. On the flip side if I'm a double wing team or a wishbone option team I can get by with 2 solid coaches. For the record I'm not saying Grant should run either of those offenses. It is a point that the number of coaches restricts you system wise and how good you can be at said system.

Sure, but you misunderstood what I was saying when I said it doesn't matter what type of offense you run. It wasn't in reference to the number of coaches. IT was a remark meaning when a defense ggives up 40 points a game it really doesn't matter what kind of offense you run, you won't win many games.

that is what was meant by that remark, nothing to do with number of coaches or what scheme you run.

I think it comes down to both sides of the ball are not good. So GC only has 2 options. Either continue to run the same offense and defense and wait for that special class that has the skill players and big bodies to be successful or change things up. I believe if you wait for the special class and go 1-9, 2-8 or 3-7 every year til you find that special class, you will never find that class. Kids want to be a part of a winning program, especially in a sport that is so physically demanding. Football is a 10 month sport at the high school level and kids will not put in that much work over that long a period just to loose 80 or 90 percent of their games. A high school coach with limited players and a limited pipeline playing teams without those same limitations must be flexible and I hope the GC football staff can see the handwriting on the wall. Good luck Braves.

Sounds like the classic conflict in a re-building project. Mamas and Papas want to win now and can't believe that their little Johnny isn't as good as the the kids on the other team who have paid the price for years to be good. Siple comes from a background of winning and has won by himself at another institution and he is trying to build a Program with a vision for the long haul. Knowledgable football people would give him time and money and support and see what he can do.

I agree with Iam4thecats

It takes time and as my understanding this is only Coach Siple's 2nd year. You have to give them time and the kids have to buy into the program before anything postive will take affect on the field.

I can't speak for Jaws but I know neither I nor Dawg1 have children in the program. Past Jaws no one has made a statement that Siple should be replaced. Everyone is pretty aware that the program is rebuilding. Well honestly you have to be some where before you can rebuild so it is more of a create type of thing.

This is coach Siple's 2nd year as has been stated a number of times in this thread. What the players have went through over the past 4 years has been stated in this thread. There are both offensive and defensive issues that need to be addressed over the offseason and time.

There you go . . . being rationale, reasonable and knowledgeable. Clearly you must live in another part of GC than Jaws.

In all honesty, I'm glad to see folks like you and Dawg making those kinds of observations and sounding like real supporters with your own opinion. Now, how do you guys get on the coaching staff and contribute?

I don't live in Grant lol.

Barrel, it is true that a lot has happened in 4 years. The only winning seasons this program has ever had was in 2007, 2008 when Davis was there, then they have had 2 other head coaches since that time in a three year span. The record for the last three years barring a win on Friday is 6- 24. I know that the middle school program has seen success, since they were in the final four of the middle school playoffs the first year they had it. Young talent needs time in the weight room and time to develop in the new system and if they can keep the staff in place and add some quality coaches to the current staff maybe they can build it into a winner. Will the powers to be give Siple that long, I guess it depends on how much JAWS has, LOL. I do know that the lack of weight room because of NO head coach in place hurt this team. But also the apathy that is Grant County and the fact that as long as there are no issues with the program then the administration could care less weather you win or lose. As far as scheme, I have never believed the type of athletes to run the spread or Tony Franklin system was there. Now with that said I am not the coach there and if Siple thinks his schemes are the best then he should get the time to implement them and develop them. One thing about living in the community is that someone who is going to be the head coach there needs to get involved in the youth leagues and middle school, whether or not this goes on I do not know, where he lives should not matter if he is involved in the community. It is my understanding that they have plenty of money but with that money comes a lot of people who thinks they should have a say. Siple was hired to do a job, and the best thing that can happen is to let him do his job. Best of luck to the senior Braves this Friday as they go and play their last game of their high school career.

I don't live in Grant lol.

A question that keeps popping up in my head and thought I'd ask you since you may know. Why did the AD limit the number of coaches? If it was money, I'm sure they could get some volunteers possibly to help out Coach Siple.

Was just curious.
