Alcohol prohibition has been used by Protestants as a means of social control for the entirety of this country's existence.

I remember going to North Carolina a few years ago... We were out eating, and asked our server where the closest grocery store was so we could get some beer. He looked at us like we were crazy. Apparently you could only get beer in liquor stores, and they all closed at 9 pm. We told him we could get beer at a gas station until 4 am. :lol2:

 

I'll top that one. So one of my buddies from school down here moved around quite a bit as a kid because his Dad was a high school football coach (big deal in Texas).

 

Anyway, he tells some of us about one town he lived in where you could buy alcohol in a restaurant... if you were a (basically card-carrying) member of some type of "drinking" organization. Basically the organization and the laws had no other purpose than the town's church wanting to shame people.

 

Ah... small towns.

Same reasons as keeping gambling out of the state. Some just view them as vices that lead to poor behavior. For some people it can lead to poor behavior, for many more gambling and alcohol consumption can be done in a responsible manner. It all depends on if you are looking at the issues as protecting society from such behavior or protecting society's freedom to choose for each individuals' self.

 

Someone mentioned Catholics and Protestants. Catholics in the US generally came from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, etc.. All of those were cultures where enjoying some type of alcohol in social settings (beer for Ireland and Germany, wine for Italy and I am not sure for Poles) was a tradition that came with them to this country. For those protestants who were against alcohol, they tended to lean the puritanical fashion which tended to frown on alcohol since breaking away from the Anglican Church, or was it the Lutheran Church they broke away from???? I forget. Pretty sure it was Anglican. It believe it is generally the congregationalist types which frowned on alcohol where Anglicans/Episcopals, Lutherans and other mainline protestants didn't have strong views either direction.

This was the second vote for the Wet/Dry this year. First vote was No. This vote was city limits only. First time Estill County has been wet in a long long time.

 

Is it possible another vote could occur which would outlaw it again or once it passes it stays past for so many years before another vote could occur.

 

In Louisville we are seeing where the few rowdies are possibly taking away the rights of all. Liquor stores may soon have to stop selling at midnight (I think) and this may include gas stations. It sounds like roughians are hanging around late night liquors stores acting like idiots.

Was in Pennsylvania last year and experienced the nightmare of trying to find a state liquor store one night. Completely awful.

 

It seems like a lot of states out East have weird alcohol laws that I was surprised by. At least in Penn when you're at the bar you can buy loose bottles to take home with you.

Honestly I don't know. I didn't vote. I know the first vote back earlier in the year was an all county vote, this vote was Irvine city limits vote..

You don't typically see votes a few years down the road to reverse once they get past. When people realize the ground isn't going to open up and swallow your town tend to let it go.
