I figured the Jugs would keep the game more interesting this year in comparison to the past few meetings. It's still early; I'd say the chances of the two matching up again in the playoffs are very good.

The quickest 1st quarter of football I've seen in a while. Breds take opening kickoff and march to the Lloyd 8, where on 3rd and 1 Jack Sutkamp takes the hand off and slips, and on 4th down the Breds come up inches short. Lloyd gets one 1st down on their only possession of the quarter and the Breds run several plays before the quarter ends.

1st half the Breds offense just could not get on a roll, and some of the credit goes to the Juggs who have a couple of really big boys on the line. Franzen does a great job running the ball, but when looking to pass held on to it just a little too long. Now the 2nd half, different story. His two TD passes were a "thing of beauty", catching Enslen sprinting up the middle of the secondary and outrunning the defense for the score. Then on 4th and 5 from the Lloyd 34, Donnelly on a fly route down the sideline and Franzen hits him in stride as he crosses into the end zone. :ylsuper: Jake Smith had an "unbelievable" 73 yd punt return for a TD, however it was called back for the "phantom" block in the back :irked:, other than this not much else, the Lloyd lineman get some of the credit here. Sutkamp flatout runs through people :scared:, would love to see him run the ball more and Luke Kues was a "stud" on defense tonight, curious to see how many tackles he had....seemed like he was in on every big stop. :ylsuper:Breds need to work the "kinks out" on the extra points....no excuse to miss these and my god cut down on the motion penalties.

I will say I was impressed with this Lloyd team, they came out and did not back down one bit. I would say the program seems to be moving in the right direction. :thumb:

I dare say a bit of a boring game especially the first half.

Good things for Lloyd: Defense against the run was pretty good. Pass rush was good. Big TE made a play late in 4th quarter and recovered his own fumble. Blocked two PATs.

Bad things for Lloyd: Gave up the long pass play. Running game not good. Punting poor.

Good things for NCC: Defense stopped the run and other than last drive the pass. Two good punts ( I think they only punted twice). Long passing game. FG and good coverage on kickoffs

Bad things for NCC: Lots of penalties including 2 or 3 that gave Lloyd a first down. One (yes it was a bad call) brought back a punt return TD. Not very good on 4th down conversions. Not a lot of blocking in running game most gains were by the RB carrying tacklers or QB scrambles.

Exactly. That's NCC's problem this year and I don't know when it'll get fixed. Their blocking is horrendous, they don't have the big men right now that they've had in recent history. They have the athletes that can keep them in it for a while, but eventually there's only so much they can do. Fact of the matter, big teams will EAT up NCC this year.

For lack of a better term....it was PAINFUL!!! However a win is a win, and lets fix the issues and move on to the next game. Much work ahead for the Breds to get ready for the post season.

Sorry Clyde, forgot to add you to the update list.

Good to see NCC getting well and winning again. Thanks for the updates, Lawnboy!

From an outsider's perspective and fully realizing I may be underestimating Lloyd and the job the new staff has obviously done there this year this score doesn't seem to bode well for a big run in 2A for NCC.

Fair or unfair?

IMVHO, Fair.

But I do think the Breds have time to right the ship. They are playing quite a few sophomores both ways, and they are gaining quality experience and the starters that have been out a few weeks saw their 1st game action in a couple of weeks so I'm willing to hold out for few more weeks.

The king of Class 2A, District 6 may have entered Friday night a bit battered and appearing vulnerable, but it showed it’s still the team to beat in the district.

Newport Central Catholic won its 21st straight regular-season Class 2A district game since the start of the 2007 season by shaking off a sluggish first half offensively to down Lloyd, 22-7, at Newport Stadium.

NewCath (2-4 overall, 1-0 district) entered the game having lost four straight games, although they came against last year’s Class 5A state runner-up Cooper (31-22) and three Class 6A teams – Campbell County (21-20), Simon Kenton (30-7) and Dixie Heights (36-7).

The Thoroughbreds led just 3-0 at halftime, but got two long second-half touchdown passes from senior quarterback Mac Franzen, a perfectly thrown 54-yard post pattern to junior Nate Enslen in the third quarter and a 34-yard hitch-and-go deep up the right sideline to senior Tommy Donnelly on a 4th-and-5 play early in the fourth quarter.

NewCath outgained Lloyd 388-163 and had all but one drive in the game advance into Lloyd territory, but Lloyd stopped Thoroughbreds drives at their own 9, own 20 and own 23.

Lloyd (3-3, 0-1), which rushed for just 28 yards on 22 carries in the game, got most of its yards on its final drive of the game when it marched 77 yards in nine plays for a touchdown. The big play was a 67-yard pass from junior quarterback Hayden Molitor to 6-foot-6, 260-pound Aaron Bruner that took the ball to the NewCath 16. Molitor capped the drive by hitting Zach Riddle on a 15-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-9.

Play of the Game: With NewCath leading 10-0 late in the third quarter and having just taken over following a punt 1st-and-10 at its own 46, Franzen found Enslen wide open down the middle of the field and hit him in stride for a touchdown pass that put the Thoroughbreds up 16-0.

“We adjusted because the safety was cheating to (Donnelly’s) side so we had Nate running a backside post and it was drawn up perfectly, he ran the route perfectly and I just had to throw the ball the best I could,” said Franzen.

Players of the Game Franzen. After going a solid 6 of 8 for 94 yards in the first half he completed 6 of 10 second-half passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 52 yards on 15 carries.

Lloyd senior Kyle Grant. He intercepted two passes, the first on a desperation heave toward the end zone by Franzen on the final play of the first half and the second when he stepped in front of Brand Gray at the Lloyd 2 early in the third quarter to snuff out a NewCath scoring chance.

Quotable: Franzen on going more to the passing game early in the second half after NewCath rushed for just 51 yards on 19 first-half carries: “We definitely struggled in the first half moving the ball, but toward the end of the half we were moving the ball with the passing game and were getting more confident in it so we decided to come out in the second half and throw it a little more.”

Franzen on the team trying to stay upbeat despite the 1-4 start to the season: “It’s a rough five weeks, but the key is just for us to get through it as injury free as we can and we’ve been hit with a few this year (particularly the offensive line), but we’re starting to get everyone back and it’s a huge advantage when we go into district play. That’s the best competition we’ll see all year what we see those first five weeks and it has us ready for the games that really count.”

Extra Points: The first quarter lasted just 17 minutes of real time and the first half took just 46 minutes. The half would have taken even less time if not for an injury late in the half and two NewCath timeouts in the final 17 seconds.

The two quarterbacks combined to complete 11 of 15 passes in the first half with one of the four non-completions coming when Franzen was intercepted by Grant on the final play of the first half.

Lloyd had just 45 yards total offense in the first half, only 12 of which came on the ground on 10 carries.

NewCath forced Lloyd into three three-and-outs and recovered an onside kick (by sophomore John Harris) in the third quarter. Lloyd didn’t get its initial first down of the second half until the first play of the fourth quarter and it came when NewCath jumped offside on a 3rd-and-2 play.

Through the first half Lloyd had allowed just 10 points in its last 10 quarters.

Through the first half NewCath had scored just 17 points in its last 10 quarters.

BTW, anybody notice "daddy's little girl"? hint, she doesn't like pom-poms. :lol2:

Hope her Dixie chili was good. It's nice to see smiling faces after a win......no matter if it was ugly or not.
