NASCAR Shenanigans

Featured Replies

I don't follow NASCAR. For those of you that do, are you satisfied with the penalties that were handed down after the final "regular-season race" the other night? With the re-shuffling of the points standings?

I haven't followed NASCAR as closely as I have in the past, but I didn't care for the penalties. I thought it was a pretty clever move, to be honest.

^ Some drivers from Michael Waltrip's racing team tried to alter the outcome of the race by spinning out, pitting at unnecessary times, etc. in order to get one of their own drivers (Martin Truex, Jr.) into the Race For The Chase. They were successful, as Truex won the 12th & final spot, in great part because his teammates at Waltrip Racing aided him. Again, I thought it was smart, but NASCAR penalized Waltrip Racing last night. In being penalized, Truex lost 50 points, which enabled Ryan Newman to surpass him for the 12th spot. Newman was leading Sunday's race when one of Waltrip's cars did a purposeful spin out to bring a caution flag out.

While I don't care for NASCAR's decision, at least Jeff Gordon failed to qualify for the Chase.

In an unprecedented move, NASCAR levied the biggest penalty in its history Monday night and altered the makeup of its playoff field two days after it was set.

Gone from the Chase for the Sprint Cup is Michael Waltrip Racing driver Martin Truex Jr., who had made the championship playoff field after teammates Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers apparently manipulated the outcome of Saturday night's Richmond race under orders from the team.

Ryan Newman, whose playoff hopes were seemingly thwarted by MWR's foul play, was put back into the Chase. But Jeff Gordon, also affected, remained out of the Chase.

Going to disagree with you there. I thought he got screwed too.

NASCAR's whole "playoff" system is screwy to begin with. I mean, if you want to narrow the field down to a final 10 or 12 drivers, then fine. Let them battle it out in a 10 or 12 man field. How some schmuck who finished 37th in the points can impact the "playoffs" because he's still out there running in these final races, is beyond my comprehension.

NASCAR itself is screwy to begin with. Their penalties are arbitrary and capricious.

That being said, I am happy to see Ryan Newman get into the "playoffs". The notion that a couple of also-rans could manipulate the points outcome with fake spin-outs and unnecessary pit stops does boggle the mind.

Oh, I agree that Gordon got screwed too & if Newman is going to be let in then Gordon should be too. Of course, I won't lose sleep over it because I just don't like him.

I'm with you on the final 10 or 12 drivers, but it will never happen.

C'mon, don't leave us hanging. Inquiring minds want to know.

Oops. :lol2:

I meant to say I'm also with you on just allowing those that make the chase to run in those final races, but that will never happen. And that was all I meant to say. :lol2:

Well, that certainly was a let-down.

I know. :lol2:

Yep.

I thought maybe you were out protesting parking meters with All In, or fishing with Opie at the very least.

What a joke. #15 gets a 50 deduction and than the points are adjusted. So he

gets nothing! Not sure I'll watch the chase!
