:ohbrother: That is a disgusting assumptioon and stereotype. Exactly what generation are you talking about? Is there high school varsity coaches in their 20's? Are you talking about coaches in their 30's? 40's? For the record, I know several coaches from what I would say is a "younger" generation in different sports that care quite a bit about character, homework, representing their school and discipline.

My disgusting "assumption" is based on behavior off the court & in the classroom!! It happens in every sport everywhere & we see it everyday!! Players with poor grades or poor behavior that is overlooked so they can play the game!! I believe coaches have the position to not only make better players but also better people!! Today's coaching is mostly done by parents coaching from the sidelines!! Some coaches allow it but the coaches from the old school era (20+ yrs ago) don't let it happen!! The issue that a parent has taken their kid in & out of school purely for the athletics is a big problem in my book & a school/coach that accepts it is just as big of a problem!!! It's High School not the Pro's!! A High School Education is the priority people not High School Sports!!!

ok... It sure is weird that all coaches not from 20 plus years ago are such bad character coaches. I guess before my daughter plays for anyone, I should ask how old they are and if they consider themselves from the 20 plus years ago era. Hope some of them are still alive, I would like for her to care about her grades :lol2:

I'm not sure you'll ever get the point so I'm not gonna bother explaining!! Let's just say my kid played for a high school coach that built & continues a top program every year with athletes that are at the top academically without parents telling the coaching staff how to run things! Definitely don't see kids transferring schools in/out every other year either!! Just saying...

I believe I used "some" & not "all". I agree with that there are younger coaches that are quality coaches but I will also say that "most" of them played or came from an "old school" coached program!!!

Forgotten element in this conversation is why some younger coaches are under the pressure to make these decisions that you are talking about. Many times administrations (superintendents, principals, ADs) will support parents over coaches forcing difficult situations. Coaches nowadays do not have the same control as the ones in previous generations. Regarding the Holmes situation in particular, I do believe the prior Head Coach was told by administration that Deja's dad would be a part of his coaching staff and he would not be able to say otherwise.

There are MANY good coaches and my experience has been good with all I have come across. I would not let my child play for someone that didn't place life lessons and education first. Lucky or not...good for you!! Let the player's skill do the talking by itself!! I find it hard to believe this young lady has made the decision to transfer over & over on her own!!! Sometimes parents need to step aside & stop trying to "pave the way" for their kid!! No college I know would let it continue at the college level!!! Have some faith in your kid's ability on their own!!!

Whether or not she is eligible to play basketball this season is still to be determined but at this time she is NOT able to play. Going forward if she is indeed deemed NOT able to play this year she will sit out this year and play her senior season at HC. From a few of my "solid sources" at HC, she has no plans to leave HC and go back to Holmes or any other school. First, I hope you're right. I actually feel bad for the poor kid. But a couple thoughts. No one said she wasn't enrolled at HC and going to class. Secondly, knowing the history contributes to the speculation. I personnally would find it hard to believe she would "sit out" her junior year. History says we haven't heard the last of this if she is ruled ineligilbe. Unless I'm wrong (which I acutally hope you're right), she will be looking to play somewhere or she just has no other options at this point anyway. Which may be the case. If Clyde is correct and she can't go to Beechwood and what others say is that Holmes would not allow her to come back and play, then I'm not sure she has many options anyway, correct? With the bouncing around from school to school, I find it hard to believe she won't at least try to play somewhere.

 

HC will have a nice team regardless. And sometimes introducing someone that could potentially interfere with chemistry, may not always be the answer anyway. Not saying she is a bad apple at all (my limited experience with her says shes a good kid)...just that with girls, there is a chemistry factor and that team seemed to be gelling at the end of the year last year. When you try to introduce someone that will require the ball and will be their go to player, that doesn't always sit well...whether the personality of the kid is good or not.

Fair points and observations RCC9 - I can only give and was only giving my points from someone who most of you know is pretty directly tied to a lot of people and coaches at HC. Clearly, and in most cases with all of us on here, our thoughts and opinions may be right one day but then something happens to make it look like we didn't know after all. I can only say that while some of you would be shocked if she sat out this year and didn't play, I will go on record as saying that she stays at HC even if she is deemed inelgible this year.

 

Since we have been calling games on HC Internet Radio the last few years I have gotten to know the boys and girls players and coaches very well. That being said, I do not know her personally like I do most of the other HC kids since she has not been at HC for a few years, but all indications I have gotten from the coaching staff is that she has been great through this whole process and really likes it at HC. I can understand your point on bringing in a new player and breaking up the chemistry but I think this particular group is pretty unselfish so I don't think that would be an issue.

Working on getting live stats for girls varsity basketball this year (same company that we used for football). Access for coaches, media, and fans during and after the games. Hope we can make it happen.
