Holmes 67 Highlands 62

Featured Replies

Not much of a fight between Ben and Rice. The bigger fight was between Edmonson and I think #31 on the bench. Nice team chemistry

This is no big deal at Holmes. While its a shock to many of us suburbanites, that's just the way this bunch goes about it. They jaw at each other. They constantly look POd. They occasionally get in each other's grill like on the bench tonight. However, as we saw tonight, it has no negative effect on them. They're an emotional bunch but it doesn't seem to hurt the team.

It was that one incident, but three seperate times before the ball was inbounded Rice keep sticking out his chest to him and running his mouth, Ben G was talking to, the refs keep an eye on it, i wouldn,t want to get in between those two,

I'll say this, if Highlands wins the region, they will have earned it. Running through the 35th is a monumental task. Whichever team wins the region will have to beat 2 out of these 3 teams... or possibly all 3... the region will be won by the true champion.

Highlands D keeps them in every game. They frustrated Holmes tonight with their in-your-face D. They are very aggressive in denying the ball, cuttig off the passing lanes , and providing help.

I like watching them.

BTW, I'd take Ben G on my team every day.

not to go to far off subject but i am anxious to see if Highlands can slow the tempo against PC on the 18th and who will end up guarding Elloiot

Why would it not be Tanner Johnson?

I like Tanner but Pat Elliot plays so physical you wouls almost have to put Ben G on him to match his strentgh

Then you could put tanner on Elrod, and the Vories/Mains matchup would be perfect

Random thoughts:

1. Holmes had no one who could stop Vories one-on-one.

2. I'e said it before and I'll say it again: Austin Hill is Holmes best player. Period.

3. Both teams stunk it up at the foul line tonight. What is DJ's FT%? I've watched him twice and he's struggled both times.

4. Tanner Johnson needs to control his emotions and not get himself in foul trouble. I love his hustle and toughness but he has to be smart.

5. Highlands proved that they can win the region.

I think Tanner Johnson has matured a ton over the last four years, I think the refs are looking for something to call on him.

His last two were legit fouls. His offensive foul could have been called a dribble before it was. He literally had his off-arm out i nthe guys chest.

His last one was just silly. DJ got the rebound and Tanner tried to press him and draw an offensive foul. However, DJ went sideways instead of into Tanner and Tanner hooked him with his knee. Easy call.

That is your view, but others seem to have other views. I think that H on the chest just draws a lot of extra fouls.

All I can say is Holmes got this one but look out if or when there is a regional tourney rematch.

I know your not trying ot say Highlands gets ripped by the refs at home? LOL I think every other person who has played basketball in the 9th region will disagree with that.

Austin Hill is looking like the player I visioned when I say some talented small kid playing a pick up game at St.Augustine in Covington a few years back. It took Austin a few years to catch back up with them, but I'm starting to sway CSHS and HSSB way as much as I hate it. But I still think its hard to choose between Henderson and Hill.

I'm sorry I just don't see how a team can lose in the 9th with a decision on who is better Rice,Hill, Hendeson or Jefferson. An arguement can be made for all and I wish i was the coach with the problem.

I agree with everyone of your points here.

Jeffrey Vories clearly showed that when he has the ball in the backcourt he can blow by you with either his lethal crossover or by simply using that quick first step and dipping his shoulder to squeeze by you. Several times he blew by Jefferson and got to the rim but they just werent falling. He had a couple of nice buckets in the pressure filled 4th quarter as well, a reverse layup on the baseline off an assist from Michael smith. It is tough when you get to the rim and you have 3 sets of paws up there just as high swatting at you. It kind of makes you adjust your shot a little.

Johnson does get emotional but I heard before the game from one of the parents on HHS side when they saw the refs walk in, they said something to the fact that "there is the guy who called all 5 fouls on Tanner the other night." Although, I will say the calls were inconsistent on both sides. Holmes fans had plenty to complain about also.

Guidugli made some nice play, he is a warrior. The rice incident was nothing but I thought it was a joke how one of the refs leaves the spot of inbounding the ball to run all the way down the court to stop the jawing. It was simple jawing, no pushing or anything.

HHS can win the region. There is something to be said about playing man to man 90% of the game against a very athletic team in Holmes. They are going to cause you to foul, its inevitable. HHS had several players in foul trouble. It also wears you down, Vories looked very tired in the 2nd half and it was evident on his FT's.

As far as Holmes goes, these are guys that if I brought my best 5 buddies to Randolph park in Cov for a pickup game and I saw them warming up on one end, I may just get back in the car and leave. They all have tremendous skills. Austin Hill is verrrrrry good. Runs the break well, gets to the rim, has a nice soft shot and nails his FT's. Rice got the break going a couple of times, pulled up with some nice shots. Henderson was not much of a factor but he is a leaper with some great skills. Edmonson was surprisingly off tonight, looked totally out of the game. Down by 5 in the 4th qtr early and it was a 1 on 3 break and instead of pulling it out and setting up he fired up a 30 foot airball... I think at that point Coach Henley had seen enough and asked him to come over and get some splinters.

Holmes is still the #1 team... but HHS if they can play like they did in that 1st qtr for atleast 3 qtrs.... they can get to Rupp.

One of watched as a "fan" of Highlands and one of us watched as a fan of basketball. I understand.

Knowing the volatility of the two involved, you cannot blame the refs for being overcautious. Its better to be that than to let them continue jawing which is going to lead to more and each getting unnecessary Ts.

True, true.....
