Exactly!!! If you need money raise the fees and tuition. In the public forum the money is decreasing. If everyone had a choice most would love to send thier students to private schools to gain a better education. If this were not the case the higher income levels of the population would not be predominately sending thier kids to the private schools. That is a statistical fact. No state mandates on how the privates fund and spend thier money on acedemicas and athletics. Lets play by the same complete set of rules or not play at all! Those with the advantadge are the ones who want the status quo.

 

1. Public money is not decreasing per student, its increasing, as shown by almost every state study on the subject, go to the Kentucky gov website and look for dept. of education.

 

2. Both nationally and in Kentucky, the statistics clearly show that the cost of your average private school education is LESS than the amount, per student, that the average state government spends.

 

3. The overwhelming majority of additional expenditures by privates for facilities, etc., come NOT through raising tuition "when they want to," but by holding extra fund-raisers and "drives," and with parents, corporations, and others pitching in monetary support.

 

4. I will be sending my child to public schools, but I will fight to the DEATH to avoid government regulation of private enterprises, including private schools, particularly private, religious schools.

 

5. Someday, someone on these threads is finally going to get it that the primary issue that publics need to address is WHY parents want to send their children to private schools. KERA is a failure. Parents want to avoid it. It went into effect in 1990 and calls for its "goals" to be reached in 2014. 24 years to reach your goals? No enterprise would call that successful (and we're not going to reach them anyway). "Fairness" has nothing to do with it, the parents of private school students want BETTER for their kids and are making it happen, rather than sitting back and waiting for the GOVERNMENT to make it "fair." I applaud them. Private is not an option for me, the way I will take action is to work like HELL to make my public school better for my sons, and go the extra mile at home to make sure they are learning. The private schools are not the problem.

As funding increase the mandates and positions in the administration that are created by mandate of the state are increasingly taken a bigger portion if the education dollar. Such programs as alternative schools are a huge recipiant of each system dollars. This dollar per student ratio is overwhelming and affects the overall ratio. When all these government programs are removed the dollars are decreaing by drastic amounts. What we think of as traditional education is suffering and I do not want the government in the private sector but you cant have it both ways.

It amazes me that the privates fight so hard to play the public schools. What is wrong with winning the Catholic championship? I guess when an intelligent argument eludes someone resorting to name calling is always the best way to express your point of view!!!!

The privates do play privates as well as publics... They want a State Championship, not a semi-state championship... I don't see where your going...

I guess we could debate semantics over what portion of the budget is used for "actual education," and then also how you define that phrase, but the bottom line is the amount of total budgeted dollars divided by the number of students is higher per capita in the public arena than it is in the private. If the problem is the amount of money left over after we pay teachers and administrators is low, I agree that's a problem. One reason for that is that there is a burgeoning cost of "benefits" (insurance coverage + retirement packages) that are eating up much of the budget. BUT, don't privates have to deal with the same issue? Its a two-edged sword. You can't claim that the total pie is being divided smaller and then argue privates don't have that same problem. What becomes painfully obvious after looking at these things is 1) privates manage their money better, and 2) privates get more bang for their buck

I agree100 %. Do you think privates are smarter or could it possibly be that the publics ahve to satisfy Frankfort. The government is not known for its intelligent use of funds and this is the huge difference. Again I comend the privates for what they do. But by not having to deal with a govenrment for every program the privates are simply better managed.

There are simply not enough of them of similar size to hold a competitive tournament!! Would you like to be some of these 100-200 kid schools and have to play a Trinity or X to win a title?? Most are probably in the medium to small range, sizewise; but then a couple are the largest in the state.

I will say this honestly. I support a private school right now at this very moment. Our school does not have extra money to just throw around. With teacher salaries, and a huge school building to keep running, the school barely breaks even and does NOT have a huge budget to throw away money. I know of MANY public schools that have huge budgets (see Marshall County). My school does not, and we are heralded as one of the most well rounded schools in the state as far as academics and athletics. Private schools do not have a lot of money, contrary to apparent popular belief.
