Police looking more like military

Featured Replies

Its very simple arming the police like the military is a way around laws meant to stop the military from policing regular citizens. Swat has gotten out of control.
Most police departments in the country deploy their SWAT teams only a handful of hours each year. Police are not for the most part being armed like the military but like the citizenry, AR-15 type rifles that anyone can purchase at your local sporting goods store. Some police Departments have Hummers, so do many citizens. Body Armor? go on-line you can buy all you want. If we can't pay police enough for the job that they chose to do, should we not at least provide the equipment to support and protect them as best we can?

Say an Indictment is issued for local drug dealer after a long investigation. Drug dealer lives in a house that is barricaded to keep everyone out, who should we (society) send to arrest this guy?

How often is the local SWAT team used in your area? Could we get some examples of how "out of control" they are? Again you say they're arming police like the military, what weapons are you referring to that has become standard issue for police officers that you feel is over the top for what officers should be armed with?

Anyone willing to risk their own life is capable of committing a similar crime, no law or preparation can stop every lunatic out there. As far as all of the money spent not making us any safer...technology was used to ID these guys from video surveillance, they were planning additional attacks which were thwarted due them being caught in a relatively quick time frame. Remember how during 9/11 there was so much confusion and lack of coordination from all of the first responders having different communication systems that didn't allow them to communicate, didn't seem to have that problem this time and that's partially due to the changes and upgrades in communications that was a lesson learned during 9/11.
Right, but it isn't going to just totally stop it. Again, how much freedom are we willing to give up?

SWAT has gotten out of control in what ways?

How are you giving up freedom when the government provides its local police with equipment and firearms to protect themselves in dangerous situations with?

What freedom is given up by giving the police the same rifle that I have in my closet?

What freedom does better training and tactics for law enforcement take away from me?

If your son or daughter was in Law Enforcement would you not want them to have the best equipment and training possible?

You are combining a lot of different topics into one.

Ill stick to the police "militarization" issue.

The equipment I've read about isn't really about preventing crime. The rifles, trucks, and other tactical gear issued is being used by special units in high risk/dangerous situations. Like I pointed out before, at the Boston marathon the first police you saw responding were uniformed boston police officers. Once the two terrorists murdered the police officer, and then started shooting it out with police and throwing pipe bombs at police they escalated it even more. But even then, I believe the first officers involved in the shoot out were regular uniformed police. The "swat" teams were used during the man hunt later.

Having the tools they had may have led to the capture of the suspects faster but we will never know. What I do know is I'd rather the good guys have the weapons ( I'm talking about rifles, not bazookas) and tactical gear to protect themselves rather than sending them into a rifle fight with a .40 pistol and a vest that won't even slow down a round from an AR.

Do I think all officers should walk around at all times with AR's and camo? No. But that isn't what happens anyways.

And there have been cases like a SWAT team raiding the home of an innocent guy, accusing him of downloading child porn because the guy had an open wireless router or where an animal shelter was rehabilitating an injured baby deer so they responded with surveillance, aerial photos and a SWAT team. How about where a SWAT team raids a house at 6 AM and handcuffs the father of three young kids to execute a Dept. of Education search warrant for his estranged wife's defaulted student loans? Trust me, there's more like these. It's over the top and I'm not sure why it's come to this.

I'm not talking so much about the guns they have, it's the things they're doing.

Weren't you one of the guys concerned as to why the government was buying so much ammo? I may be mistaken, but I thought you were among us.
