Who wins? I can answer that one...nobody. :bunny:

Belfry's scrimmages are not down and distance scrimmages. They do not resemble anything close to a football game. Coach Haywood walks to the beat of a different drummer when it comes to this topic, and he is not flexible.

What will happen is each team will first take turns kicking extra points and short field goals. Then they will alternate punting to each other a few times. Then when everybody is good and loose they will commence the scrimmage, such as it is.

One team will start on their own 30 or so and they will run 10 plays. That team will continue to keep the ball until their 10 plays are up, even if they "score" multiple times, but scores will not be recorded. Coaches will be on the field everywhere helping kids at all positions. Substitutions will be numerous and often and it will feel more like a practice session than a game.

After a few series of that, the JV and Frosh will face off in a similar fashion for a couple of series.

In the end, fans will grumble a little because we didn't look great, but the reality is the personnel on the field hardly ever is the "starting unit" that you will see on opening night. Lots of younger guys will get reps with the older guys. Coaches are looking at individuals and positions much more than team goals it seems. Unless you are very familiar with the team and watching specific positions, it is not a very exciting thing to watch.

BTW, I am not sure of that kickoff time, is that official? I haven't heard a kickoff time announced.

2C, do you know anything about Richlands? School size/class? Looks like a decent record last season. Also, what part of Virginia is the school located in, because I've never seen them on any of our mountain school schedules?

I don't really know much other than what I can find online.

They are in western Va located about halfway between Bristol and Bluefield, near Tazewell. They are a very successful 2A (I think) school. Their enrollment is listed as 746 which would put them about the same size as Belfry, they would be a 3A school in KY.

From Maxpreps:

From 2004-2012 they compiled a 101-15 record with a state championship and it looks like a couple of runner up finishes, including a 33 game win streak from 2004-2007.

They have a new coach this year.

They are ranked 136 in VA overall and 4386 Nationally on Maxpreps.

Belfry is ranked 25 in KY overall and 1631 Nationally on Maxpreps.

Richlands is a powerhouse in Southwest Virginia and arguably the best program in SW Virginia along with Graham (Ahmad Bradshaw's old High School). With that said, Southwest Virginia football typically isn't very strong and there aren't very many "Big Schools" with the majority of the programs being Class 3A size and below. They are a 2A school after dropping down from 3A this season. I have seen some pre-season polls where they are ranked across the board at #2 or #3 to start the season.

From what I gather their bread and butter is the spread and they return their Starting QB and best RB.

'Tusi nailed it re: Belfry Scrimmage Format.

There are certain fanbases on here who I swear could recite the Final Score of their scrimmage against Louisville Moore in 1996. A Coach Haywood scrimmage would drive them batty. The typical response following a Belfry scrimmage on the message boards is to have one fanbase claim they "won" while the other claims they "won". There are instances where Belfry just dominates physically in every aspect to where there is no doubt, but by and large the outcome of a Haywood scrimmage is grey area at best HAHA. Not only is it a revolving door of substitutions as 2C mentioned, but Belfry will usually pass 2-3 times per 10 plays (which should tell you something). Additionally, Belfry will almost exclusively play their base defense and just sit there letting the LB's read; no blitzing, no stunts.

What I have learned to look for to gauge what kind of product to expect, and what I am hoping to take from this scrimmage:

- How crisp is the timing of the backfield? Are they fumbling exchanges, busting plays, or running into linemen?

- How does the team speed on defense look?

- Is the D-Line creating a positive surge?

- Are they hitting hard and making sure tackles or are they arm tackling?

The best Belfry teams usually receive passing marks on the above.

We need schools in Kentucky with cool names like Lord Botetourt High School!

If St. X beats Trinity twice this year they may rename the school "Lord Wolford" judging by the comments on here :D

The game is on a Friday and I was just going by the usual 7:30 Kickoff, that most teams go by in scrimmages and regular season games

Gotcha. I think I would leave it as TBA unless you are certain of the time. I would hate to arrive at 7:30 and then find out I missed the whole scrimmage.

Maybe a mod could change it to 6:00pm since it has been reported.

You pretty much nailed it. Richlands has won some state titles in the past but I haven't seen them on that kind of level for a while. Very good team for this part of Virginia. Because of their region they are always a contender. Should be a good scrimmage and I hope Belfry smacks them around.

Also have Faquier in Northern Virginia. Prince George. Lots of noble names in VA!

OK, that had to be hard for you to type :D

Definitely. I've seen some of the town and county names - old school English gentry!
