August 8, 201313 yr I saw a FB post that talked about deficit reduction and past deficits. I'm always a bit cynical of the slant that may applied to those. I googled "deficit history by President" and got the following. History of Deficits and Surpluses In The United States Your thoughts?
August 8, 201313 yr There are some pretty simple thoughts I could make but I'm going to look at some stuff before I post and someone goes ape crap because I don't get a fact correct. Clyde this at first look appears to be one of the best looks at this I have ever seen and seems to have most of the pertinent info needed when looking at the info.

It's certainly interesting and doesn't SEEM(key) to match the rhetoric.
August 9, 201313 yr 5 Surpluses when Republicans held the White House 7 Surpluses when Democrats held the White House (4 were in the 5 years immediately after WWII) 5 Surpluses when Republicans held the Senate 7 Surpluses when Democrats held the Senate 6 Surpluses when Republicans held the House of Representatives 6 Surpluses when Democrats held the House of Representatives 4 years in which Republicans controlled all 3, all were deficit years 2003-2006 27 years in which Democrats controlled all 3, 2 years (49 and 51) had surpluses while 25 had deficits Doesn't seem to be much of a pattern either way.
August 9, 201313 yr We will take Bill....just keep him away from the help.... Kinda what I've said for years.
August 9, 201313 yr Kinda what I've said for years. The thing that helped during the 'Clinton years' was the steadily rising stock market and steady growth that generated steady revenues. Also he did not launch any crazy, costly programs (Hillarycare) or get into any drawn-out wars. In fact, he was known for welfare reform that lowered cost. Rules of the deficit seem to be: 1. No drawn-out wars. 2. No big programs 3. Keep the market going to generate cap gains since ordinary income tax is capped by how much people can work and cap gains is not.

HUGE tax increase helped. Yes to all three. :thumb:
August 9, 201313 yr Author What caught my attention is seeing 1.4 then 1.3 then 1.3 again and the 0.9B after hearing Rep Cantor saying that the reason he will oppose raising the debt ceiling is due to the continuous rising deficit. My guess is he's being a bit disingenuous - wanting to imply it HAS BEEN going up and using the expected deficit increase starting in 2016. Surely I'm not the only one who a)hasn't followed the actual deficit numbers very closely but b)fully expected to see the report showing a dramatic annual increase over the last few years, right? IMO this shows the power of "message."

Even with the project decrease for 2013 to $900 Billion, that is still higher than any of the the Bush War (with 2 wars being fought) years by over $400 Billion.

August 9, 201313 yr As I've heard Bill Clinton say (on the stump for Hillary). "When folks say they don't miss me, I ask them what they don't miss most - the peace or the prosperity."
August 9, 201313 yr Let me get this straight. Did "Newt and the boys" help engineer the "huge tax increase"?
