Seaver, Bench, Cy Young, Spahn, Koufax and Lefty Grove have all been mentioned. Everybody good with those? Everybody agree that Rivera should be once he's eligible? How about Junior?

 

What about the likes of McCovey, Clemente and Feller?

I'd agree with Schmidt. I'd also say that Lou Brock and Carl Yastrzemski could have strong cases made for them as well.

If it's ever going to happen going forward, it'll be either Mariano Rivera or Ken Griffey Jr.

 

They will be nowhere close, imo. Mo being a reliever. And Griffey's career tailed off at the end, and though he was never linked to PEDs, a lot of the voters will still have some kind of cockeyed view that they will not vote for anyone within the time frame on the first ballot.

This may sound a bit odd to some, but I think one could make a case for Ozzie Smith. His offensive numbers are decent, he played into his 40s and as someone once said, he was the only player who people paid money to watch play defense.

These list are hard but no way I could leave Gehrig off. I would have to put him in ahead of either Ricky or Stan the Man. Same for XX.

2. (tie) Foxx

2. (tie) Gehrig

3 Henderson

 

That being said, I think all four of them had stats/careers that were worthy of being 100%-ers.

How many games did The Wizard save in his career with his glove? Is there really another infielder like him? Maybe Brooks Robinson? Ozzie made the Hall of Fame with a 91.74 percentage, No. 24 all-time.

Ozzie was great, but he was also IMO very over rated. The media loved him and he was flamboyant with his back flips and all but in reality wasn't any better than some other great SS's not in the Hall.

But, see that was the whole point of this little "exercise". Just because Cal Ripken's in the top 5 as far as HOF voting percentage doesn't necessarily mean that he's a top 5 player of all time. Where someone ends up in the HOF voting is usually more indicative of how well they were liked by the friggin' writers. I'm not saying Ozzie was a bad player, or not deserving of being in the HOF. But, to say that he's one of the top 24...no way. Yes, his defense was great. But, I'd dare say that the offense brought to the table by the likes of Honus Wagner, Ernie Banks, Ripken, Robin Yount, and even Lou Boudreau might make them more deserving to be listed above Ozzie.
