War on Drugs...what should be done?

I don't think the government should tell anyone what they can or cannot put in ones body in a free society. Still have laws protecting the youth but if grown adults want to kill themselves through drug use let them.
Should over use of these items be regulated?

Legal or illegal, the majority of companies will still test for it and not allow workers to be influenced. If they managed to do it for tobacco they could easily do it with other drugs, legal or not.

How many people do we think would start using because it's legal? Most of this stuff is so easily attainable I think anyone that wants to use is using, and vice-versa.

In my experience Drug Testing of an employee isn't as easy as it sounds. We had to have several people witness something to have PC then had to get an approval from legal to get someone drug tested. Smaller companies can probably do it easier but if you test someone and they are clean in many cases they will turn around and try to pursue a Civil Case against employer.

It's already being done. Not sure what would change.

Some companies may do it but the company that I worked for it was nearly impossible (except in the case of an accident) to get anyone drug tested. Talking to those WAY above me it was due to the amount of times the company had been sued when test came back clean. They just did not want to test anyone unless you pretty much caught them in the act.

Sure legalize it, then those that don't work can find new ways to spend my tax money.

What was the cause of action to support a civil suit?

They have claimed that they were targeted unjustly for extra scrutiny.

Anyone have any factual evidence supporting the claims that spending more money on treatment and education will help the drug problem?

I know several people who have gone to rehab. I've never seen it work.

Also, how will a more pure form of heroin do anything to help the addiction users quickly develop on that specific drug? And if its legal, will that stop those who choose drugs over work from stealing from others to support their habit?

I know two people who were addicted to heroin and both are clean for over a year.

1. I'm not saying anything about it helping the addiction. The drug is the drug. I'm talking about taking out added dangers.

2. Also, if the user knows the actual purity of the drug an accidental overdose is less likely.

Targeting Drug Addicts? That doesn't sound like something you would want. Govt must never target anyone, right?

So it is still a crime to Grow, Deal or Traffic Drugs in Portugal? The only change in the law has been for possession of small amounts (for personal use) now results in forced treatment or community service.

I don't think there are many people in prison for having a joint or even a hit of Meth on them. Nearly all people in prison for drug offenses come from Growing, Dealing or Trafficking...that seems to be where the LE Drug War is focused.

Let me get back to this when I have more time and am not on my iPhone.

They have claimed that they were targeted unjustly for extra scrutiny.

A policy that subjects ALL employees to random drug screens and provides for mandatory drug screens following an accident/injury at work would be legally enforceable.

Now, if an employer is targeting a specific employee (or group of employees, i.e. black women over 40) for one reason or another, that's a different story.

How do you suggest we get them to stop stealing from others to support their habit? Or will legalizing it also mean we just give it to them for free?

And by stealing I mean small thefts from cars, burglaries from houses and robberies from people.

So...for all of you knocking the legalize it route. What's your solution?

Is asking questions considered "knocking"?

Before I agree that we encourage people to use drugs by legalizing it and making it available to all, I think some statistics or evidence that it will work should be provided.

I don't think what we are doing right now is working. But I don't see how legalizing it will solve all problems.
