Transfer?

Featured Replies

Everyone in every sport talks about transfers. Some like it and some complain. It just depends on which side of the transfer you are on. I like transfers and I hate transfers. As a fan, the school receiving the transfer usually benefits from having a better team so therefore I like it. As a former athlete, I hate it. I would hate working and working and working and find myself sitting on the sideline because of a transfer.

But the reason for my thread is this... what is your definition of a "legitimate" transfer? Please do not quote KHSAA bylaws. I know what they say. I want to know what BGPers say the definition is. We all have opinions so please be respectful in your comments.

I've always felt like kids should be able to transfer and play immediately. If a kid can switch schools because of academic curriculum(happens all of the time) then a kid should be allowed to transfer for athletic reasons as well. Both kids are switching schools in this cases to better prepare themselves for their future. I've never understood why any kid should be punished for switching schools.

For me, all transfers are legitimate.

I do not consider any change of schools before high school a transfer. My definition is almost the same as the KHSAA definition, although I consider someone who switches after freshman year a transfer even if they don't have varsity experience.

Even if there is illegal contact and something slipped under the table?

No one in particular. I'm talking all kids. I say let them transfer without penalty if they want. Makes no sense to penalize athletes only. I know kids that leave school systems because their academic curriculum isn't up to par. If the academic kid is pursuing a better high school experience why can't the athlete?

When was the last time anyone got caught doing that? We hear stories all of the time but nobody every gets penalized so if it's going to happen it's going to happen regardless.

If my kid enjoys playing for Coach A and Coach A leaves and goes to school B and my kid wants to go play for him he should be allowed to without penalty IMO.

Caught? That is a good one.

It happens. There is tampering.

But for the most part I agree with you on transfers.

There is no recourse. Anyone who has a vested interest has kids who move on and out of high school and no one figures that the battle is worth it. You can't tell me there aren't scads of improper texts, conversations, etc. but until there is someone who wants to grind the axe with hard evidence, nothing will change. Schools, coaches, parents push the envelope because there's no recourse like PP92 said. I'll say it again, we are heading down the path to club basketball. It seems a likely result.

Hope it is not in my lifetime.
