Campbell County 2013/2014

Featured Replies

Basketball season for 2013/2014 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Campbell County? Remember, please be constructive.

Lady Camels lost about 80-90% of their scoring from last year to graduation. Only 3 seniors on the team this coming season, so we will be very young. The talent is there but very few with varsity experience. Some of the girls need to step up and fill the scoring void left by the two seniors last year. A couple sophomore transfers are coming in which should help tremendously on the boards but haven't seen them play yet. Lady Camels have a tough December schedule which should prepare them for the districts. Big question is who steps up for this young team in the scoring department.

^ Thanks for the info! :thumb: I didn't know much about the Lady Camels.

Junior Carson Gray returns as the starting PG and she distributes the ball very well. They will need her to score more this coming year.

As mentioned, the Lady Camels have a lot of young talent and Coach Murray gets the most out of them.

Where are the transfers from and what position do they play?

Both girls are taller so they will play a 4 or 5. They came from Bourbon County and Oak Hills and both are only sophomores.

Two 8th graders have been added to the varsity roster for CC. Taylor Clos and Mackenzie Schwarber are expected to play intrical minutes for the camels varsity team. They are to my knowledge the first two middle school kids to be moved up and be on varsity in recent school history.

Not sure how much these two girls will contribute this year at the varsity level but they are definitely nice ball players and will gain important varsity knowledge at a young age which many dont get a chance at. Paige Bowling, Taylor Griffin played up at the varsity level as 7th graders in recent school history

Basketballislife, I saw your similar thread about cooper kids moving up. Isn't this just as indicative of the state of the program as it is the talent of the 8th graders who are moving up.

It could be a combination of both. I just make this point, I don't see anyone question UCONN every year when they start a freshmen. No one questions the state of UCONN's program when they have a youngster that has worked hard, has the skills, and talent to be great.

Time will tell if it's the programs state or the talent of the youngsters.

Ally Niece from Scott HS has started on varsity since she was a 6th grader and no one questions her talent or ability.

My point is that if a program has to play middle schoolers at the varsity level, that it may (notice I said MAY) be indicative of the program being down. There are always exceptions and exceptional players who can put up big numbers at the varsity level even though they are still in middle school, ala Jaime Walz, but more often than not, it is a sign of a struggling program.

Don't think that anyone could say that the Lady Camels are a "down" program - District Champs 3 years running and have played in the region championship game the last 2 years. While several major pieces graduated there is still talent in Campbell County.

Agreed. The Lady Camels have not been what I would consider "down" but then again, I don't think they have had to rely on middle schoolers playing major roles in the last 2 to 3 years either.

As far as whether they are taking a temporary downward turn, I really don't know. We shall see soon enough. I do, however agree with Ian Moone's general point. Usually, any school that has to use middle school girls to start or play major varsity minutes does not end up that competitive and they usually do not win district championships, much less truly compete for regional championships.

Will these young ladies be Varsity players only, or JV and Varsity? Can you elaborate intrical minutes. Not familiar with that term.

These girls will play JV and dress Varsity. We lost several seniors and with some injuries already, they may log more varsity minutes than coach anticipated. Key this year is who steps up as a leader in the scoring department? If they are relying on 8th graders to carry that burden, it will be a long year for the lady camels. I don't see that happening though but only time will tell! :thumb:
