LAWRENCEBURG – The Collins softball team couldn’t complete a last inning rally, falling to Gallatin County in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament on Monday morning.

 

The Wildcats topped the Titans 3-2 at Anderson County.

 

The game was scoreless for the first 2 1/2 innings until Gallatin County tallied twice in the bottom of the third inning.

 

Bailey Rankin cut the Wildcats’ lead in half when she led off the top of the fourth with a home run to left field for Collins.

 

Gallatin County (19-1) added another run in the bottom of the fifth, before holding off the Titans’ seventh-inning rally.

 

With one out in Collins’ last at-bat, Danaria Lewis singled before Janette Hynes hit into a fielder’s choice. Lindsey Ketcham followed with a single to left field before Janette Hynes scored when a ground ball hit by her twin, Janelle, was errantly fielded by Gallatin shortstop Brooke Dossett. However, with runners on first and second Lauren Shepherd hit into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

 

The Titans’ season ended at 19-20.

Collins played the max number of games they are allowed to this season (36 regular season). They played in 6 tournaments (Meade County, Oldham County, Woodford County, Franklin County, Jeffersontown, and DuPont Manual). Playing 39 games against good competition really helped this young team improve.

I think this is AWESOME, but 20 games so far this season for Gallatin is inexcusable IMO. You do your players no justice playing so few games.

I agree. A team as good as Gallatin should play more than 17 games in the regular season. I understand that games get cancelled with weather and all, but Collins scheduled somewhere around 40 games this season knowing that some would get cancelled. Gallatin also plays most of their games against their district opponents, playing them 3 or 4 times a year. I would like to see them maybe get in a few tournaments and play some better teams in the area, because there are plenty of good teams they could play. In my opinion, it does them no good to play some of the teams they face. I'm sure the players would love to play more games in the season too.

Gallatin County deserved the win, they made the plays needed to get the W, the pitcher did a nice job keeping Collins from stringing multiple hits together. Bailey Rankin was on deck when they got the final out, wish she would have had a chance to bat, she was hitting .591 with runners on base. Good Luck to Gallatin County in the next round, look for them to be in the final. I believe Oldham County will return to the state Tournament for the 2nd straight year.
