Rep Max

Featured Replies

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what strong rep max would be coming out of high school. I have no idea what a respectable max might be, and I was just curious.

Going into my senior year at the NFLPA combine in Lexington, I did 29 which was good for 3rd at the combine. So I'd say depending on position maybe 20-25 would be good for a LB/FB or OL/DL. Probably for a skill player I'd say 10-20 reps of 185. Some LB from Michigan this past year put up 51, at a rivals combine, but that's freakish.

I know that when I was in highschool at the Nike Combine in Athen's GA the averages were right around these numbers (of course most of these athletes are the best in the South, so take this for what it is worth):

185 LB BENCH REP MAX:

OL/DL - 30-60....... two linemen the year I attended broke the combine record repping it 65 and 63 times. The biggest variation is at this position, but I would say keep it above 25 and you are fine. Anymore then 35 or 40 is extremely strong.

LB/FB - 20 or more

DB/WR/RB - between 15-20, anymore then 20 is very strong for a skill position coming out of high school.

I don't like the rep max at all. Football is an explosive game and rep maxing is not what the player will do on the field. I guess these combines need to have this format for times sake. Imagine how long it would take to 1 rep max everyone there. Don't get me wrong I do believe in muscle endurance, but in this sport there should be an effort to condition for both strength and endurance. I guess what I'm saying is football athelets should be somewhere in between a power lifter and an endurance lifter.

EX: I've seen a kid that can bench 225 ten times, which equals to 315 one rep, and get burried when you put those 3 plates on each side. JMO

Anyone reading this thread is obviously interested in Combines. Those of us in the outer parts of the State often don't hear about upcoming Combines until they're over. Does anyone know what's coming up, where and when, etc.?

I was that guy!!

I could rep out 225 lbs 19 times and never could get 315 lbs all the way up. I probably should have done more negatives, but oh well. :D

I believe that to be considered strong 18 would need to be repped around 20 times.

I would totally agree.

However in defense of combines...... the 185 or 225 lb bench rep out really isnt performed to display a players explosive strength. This is accomplished through other combine events..... namely the vertical jump. Upper body explosive strength or upper body explosion isnt really that important to football anyways....... at least when compared to lower body explosiveness. The bench rep out is just done to give coaches a rough idea of where a kid stands in terms of upper body strength and endurance.

Also, as you already pointed out, this test is very time efficient....... and despite the fact that it doesnt measure explosiveness, it is fairly accurate in determining a rough estimate max. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, like the kid you described.

185 20 times 18 lbs would not be too strong huh.

LOL..... I think it also depends on what position you are looking at.

If you could rep 225lbs 19 times you should be able to get even more than 315. I could rep 225lbs 10-12 times an get around 315-320.

I rep 225 right at 15 or 16 times. The most I have ever one rep benched max is 325lbs. I think that breaking 300 lbs and 315 lbs as your one rep max is more a mental obstacle then physical one. This is why some ppl can rep 225 alot but struggle to bench 315.

I'll take an oath. :thumb:

The most I ever got was 305, creatine induced, but that was the most I ever lifted. I think a lot of it had to due with these things.......I never really walked into the gym with "maxxing out" in my mind. I am not built for lifting at all, small shoulders & long arms. My normal weight is 175 lbs & I am 6' tall, although I probably weighed about 185 at the time. My goals for lifting at the time were definition & muscle response.

My brother was the complete opposite. He could max out near 350, but could only do 225 lbs 12 times. He is more stocky built, and it seemed that since all he worried about was strength that he lacked definition, IMO.

BTW......I agree with you. I, too, thought I should have been able to do more than 315. Maybe I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough.

Two years ago Sheldon Clarks starting center Paul Schmidt (senior at the time) repped 225 almost 26 times.

His max was 385 when he graduated.

Not sure how that us for a high school player....

Even here in Louisville I would suspect there are many who don't know when and where the combines are. I would also ask the same question. Does anyone have info or could tell us where to find dates/locations of combines.
