Rep Max

Featured Replies

Two years ago Sheldon Clarks starting center Paul Schmidt (senior at the time) repped 225 almost 26 times.

His max was 385 when he graduated.

Not sure how that us for a high school player....

Very solid for an offensive linemen.

Once again...... when you are talking HS players I think you also have to take into account what position they play and what type of body build they are.

Those 2 factors will play major roles in how well they perform at either the rep out max or the one rep max.

I'll take an oath. :thumb:

The most I ever got was 305, creatine induced, but that was the most I ever lifted. I think a lot of it had to due with these things.......I never really walked into the gym with "maxxing out" in my mind. I am not built for lifting at all, small shoulders & long arms. My normal weight is 175 lbs & I am 6' tall, although I probably weighed about 185 at the time. My goals for lifting at the time were definition & muscle response.

My brother was the complete opposite. He could max out near 350, but could only do 225 lbs 12 times. He is more stocky built, and it seemed that since all he worried about was strength that he lacked definition, IMO.

BTW......I agree with you. I, too, thought I should have been able to do more than 315. Maybe I just wasn't pushing myself hard enough.

A 315 one rep max at a body weight of 185 is very strong. Also, at 185 repping out 225 19 times is extremely strong.

I dont think you can equate ones rep out max to their one rep max although many ppl do this. I think both tests test different aspects of muscular strength (one rep max = explosion and rep out max = endurance) and both should be used in combination to get an accurate assessment of someone's upper body strength. After all you can train your body to perform one test extremely well, but if you cant do well on the other test then you are deceiving yourself on your upper body strength.

Also....... just for the record....... benching is the most overrated weightraining exercise for football. It is important, but pales in comparison to squatting and powercleaning, as well as core training and tricep & shoulder exercises.

Even here in Louisville I would suspect there are many who don't know when and where the combines are. I would also ask the same question. Does anyone have info or could tell us where to find dates/locations of combines.

Here's a link to the NIKE Combine dates. Get you Head Coach to contact them to get you son invited.

I agree but when you are talking about an O or D lineman the bench press does mean alot unless your a 3 yards and a cloud of dust team! If correctly done a pass set by an O-lineman requires a good bench press and not an endurance press.....Just a knock the lungs out of the oppenent punch :thumb:

The Jefferson County coaches hold a combine for upcoming High School seniors the Monday after Derby Day at Ballard High School. It is typically well attended by local college coaches.

True.... but that type of upper body "punch" movement that an offensive linemen does when pass setting is more of a tricep bench press, which isnt what we are talking about when maxing, then the typical chest bench press. This is why tricep training is so important, and is probably the most important muscle in football, apart from the quads and hamstrings!

For those of you giving info. on combines-----THANKS!

This is a good start. If anyone else has additional info, it is appreciated.

I agree, but for as long as I can remember it has been the criteria for strength around every gym I have been to.

To be honest, I do not use the barbell bench anymore, nor do I plan to do so. I use dumbbells, the incline press, and a few other things but I notice more results (visual results), without the use of the barbell bench.
