Personally I think for a kid like AJ who played 3 sports all 4 years plus Summer ball, his senior year if he finally wants a week off then I have no problem with it. 4 games not played is well worth a week off for the first time in 4 years.

 

Good for Coach Beegs. What if he would have missed a week of football during a key district game? or basketball during Christmas break. Why is baseball season any different? In many cases spring break is a chance for the team to not only play a lot of games but to practice as well. No wonder Cooper is where they are at this stage. If you want to play, you need to be committed to the team, no matter if you are a senior star or on the freshman team. Taking off for spring break sets a bad example for the entire program IMO. I get all the time he has put in to sports in his career and he is a great kid and player but you still have to be committed to the rules of the program.

He is committed and followed the rules and knew he would have to miss games. i see no problem with it. The rules were set and he followed the rules and knew what would happen if he missed games for spring break and he accepted it. He did nothing wrong. Some act as if he broke a rule, he didn't. Before the season all players were told if you miss a game then you also sit out a game, he followed the rules. It wasn't like the rule stated if you miss a game you are off the team.

Please enlighten us with your definition. Don't even question his committment the kid has not ever missed a practice or game in any sport in 12 years ,yes 12 years .he gets 1 week off a year for dead period but most the time he's playing baseball for the Colonels in the summer . He has been injured once in basketball he broke his hand and was out 4 weeks but was still in the gym practicing left handed "the whole time " and he injuried his shoulder in football but still played the game and spent weeks in therapy but still didn't miss practice so "PLEASE "sit back and find out what the kid accomplished before you start running your mouth on the this forum over a stupid week during spring break . He missed 4 games during spring break and none were District seed games so it didn't effect any of the season .

I love AJ and respect what he has done for the athletics at Cooper High School, but I agree with Oldtime. I was really surprised to hear that he would miss a week for spring break bc he's always been committed to what he's doing. I completely understand that he's burning out and has been involved in something 51 weeks a year since he was young, but this is his senior year and he's their leader. AJ is an outstanding kid, an outstanding athlete, and outstanding leader. I'm glad he got a break, but a little disappointed he let down his team.

First lets start with I don't have rose colored glasses I see perfectly. The best thing you need to do since you dont know the kid keep your opinions to yourself and quit commenting on thing you don't anything about . A.J. had a once in lifetime opportunity and he jumped on it and as far as know everyone on the team had no issues with it including the Coach because it was handled in the right manner . Also it didn't affect any seed games so leave it at that .

I really don't understand the view that you think the rules that were put in place should be different for AJ. the rules were simple, you miss a game you sit out a game...those were set before the season. The player went by those rules and has had to sit out and now you think he should be kicked off the team? Really??? Why? Like I said earlier, Bieger set the rules and AJ followed them. If Bieger would of said if you are going away on spring break you can't play I'm positive AJ wouldn't of went anywhere, but he allowed it so AJ went. The standard was set 3 years ago so it's nothing new this year.

 

As I said, if anyone is to blame it would be the coach, not the player who took advantage of the coaches rule. So I do agree with you there. I guess my entire point is this, why get on the kid when in reality he didn't do anything wrong? He simply did what the coach had agreed upon. I have no big issue with it and why it has become so big of an issue is kind of silly if you ask me.

 

If it was established that if you go on spring break don't play baseball then AJ wouldn't of went, but instead it was established 3 years ago that if you go on spring break you have to miss that many games, then that is fine. BTW, AJ started missing games before spring break because the coach knew he woulnd't be here during that week.

I'm a huge AJ Collins fan and have said he will one day be the kid that everyone says got Cooper athletics on the right track.

 

With that said I disagree with his decision. Its an old argument we've had for years on here and I disagree with many of my friends who say spring break is different. I don't see it that way. You're either fully in or not. Now there are special circumstances that we must allow for. Maybe you miss for a recruiting trip or the ACT test or a family emergency or...

 

However, a spring break vacation (IF that's what this was and I don't really know one way or the other) does not meet my definition of acceptable. Missing 8 games willfully is disappointing.

 

With that, I'm still a big fan of the kid. He simply made IMO a bad choice.

The thing that needs to be considered is what happens if so many kids decide to go on break that you cant field a team? I know it is unlikely but I'm sure the kids who stayed behind would not be happy forfeiting games, while their teammates are laying on the beach somewhere!

I will say this, Bieger screwed up IMO 3 years ago when he set the precedence for at the time one of his favorite players (IMO) and because of that he opened the door for it to happen again.

 

With that said, it will probably change next year, plus they want to take the team to Fla to play over spring break which is another set of problems I see. Those trips are not cheap and to force families to spend the extramoney on top of even more fund raising makes me question that myself. But I digress.
