Congrats to all of the players and coaches as they are all deserving. :thumb:

When I read posts where people oppose the results of coaches polls such as these, I often wonder who they think would be a better authority to vote than those who

scout these players in person, watch game film, prepare a game plan and then watch as those teams/players execute against their team. What other voting body/organization could be more qualified?

I'm not upset that Leah won. She is an outstanding player IMO and we deserving of some recognition. BUT... Player of the year? I dont know.

If you want to take scoring out of the mix then do so but take Leah away as well. What is she without her scoring? Just an avg. girls ball player thats tall. You cant take scoring out of the mix thats just silly! To me I think the voters got this one wrong but thats just my opinion. Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC). So to answer your question...coaches pick them...or in other words, the ones that know the game and it's players the best!

 

Do you agree with the pick? Olivia can play all the positions like Ms Schaeffer can. Schaeffer is a better defender. OV is a better all-around offensive player.

Wow! Have you ever seen her play? Scoring is a very small part of what makes her good.

 

Your first 3 stats all have to do with scoring. Just one part of the game. Yes, it's the part that gets printed, but not always a reflection of how good a player is. I've known plenty of scorers that haven't made it very far.

 

Your name has coach in it, so I assume you coach. Do your teams play defense, handle the ball, pass, rebound, block shots or ever need a floor leader? Basketball is so much more than scoring. You need scoring, but it's just one part.

 

Leah is a matchup nightmare on both ends of the court! Why do you think the people that scout her and have to draw up a game plan against her voted her in? As a coach playing against her, you have to worry about who will she be guarding? Will she be on my top scorer or will she play off the ball and be help defense? Will she be at the top trapping and pressing? Will she defend one our bigs? If I drive, is this big girl going to block my shot (she changes a lot of shots because of her abilities). All this is just on defense!!!! No offense to Miss Voskuhl (for the record, i think she is an outstanding player and I would have no problem if she had won it), but I don't think teams were setting up their game plans based on who she would be guarding on defense. Put it this way, Leah to HHS as one person, was what Voskuhl and Ogle were combined at ND. Voskuhl was counted on to score and Ogle was the defensive stud. Leah was both for HHS. Also keep in mind that Leah was hampered with a SEVERE ankle sprain half way through the season. She probably came back too early because she couldn't stand not playing, so that didn't help her stat line either.

 

As for offense...again a matchup nightmare. Almost 6'1" and can play in and out. Can handle and pass like a PG. Can shoot and can finish Drives. She would have lit up the rebounding category, but often played a wing away from the basket because of her versatility on offense. She is a floor leader and calming presence and has elite basketball knowledge. There is a reason she is going to Xaiver. I guess their coaches got it wrong too!

 

I'm going to steal this from someone...sorry...you know who you are. But if you could pick one 9th region player and clone them so that you would have 5 of them and you were going to play against other 9th region player that was also cloned. Who would you pick? In this game, you press and trap, run the floor, defend, block shots, rebound, shoot, handle the ball, pass and make great decisions.

 

In basketball...there are scorers, defensive specialist, rebounders and basketball players/athletes. Leah is the last one.

Some fair points but to be honest I don't she did enough offensively which is what her team needed. Sometimes you can be TOO unselfish. We saw one player take over games in the region tourney. She and her teammates are in BG today as a result. Not being afraid to take over a game when needed is a differentiator for me. (and I'm a Xavier fan who will be rooting for Leah).

For me, it's a very tough call. I probably lean towards Leah because I've seen her play so much. But that's why I don't vote! (And I'm not a coach) It's kinda splitting hairs and it depends on what you put more stock in. I do think after it was all said and done, these were the top two players. Both these players were proven against tough schedules. Both were leaders on their teams.

 

OV had a decent game against us at ND. Again, the stat sheet said she had 17-18, but she didn't shoot well against us. A lot of her points came on break away layups as we were pressing and ND was throwing over top of us and we weren't getting back. So if you take her layup points away, I thought she actually struggled the first time against us. Ogle beat us that night. So again, someone looks in the paper and sees she had 17 against HHS, they would be impressed. But we didn't really make it tough on her not getting back on defense and surrendering uncontested layups in the first half.

 

Now we all know what she did to us in the regional finals. There wasn't a girl in the state stopping her that night! An absolute incredible offensive display. She just shot dagger after dagger that night. Unbelievble performance! She made a believer out of me that night!

I would agree. Her coaches would agree and I bet her dad would agree! But I do think this was voted on prior to the region. So that may have swayed things OV's way. She was DEFINITELY the dominate player in the regional tournament!

Don't need to look it up. Stats can be misleading too. Again, won't go there. People that made these decisions aren't looking just at stats. A lot more thought goes into it than what the paper says! Heck, even at my age, if I went out and played "joe's preschool" every night, I'd light up the stat book. And, I'm not sure how familiar you are with our BGH friend from Brossart, but when you have stat keepers like that, stats are worthless. In the last couple years, Brossart softball has had like 6-7 girls listed with the top offensive averages in the city. So stats are only as good as the person keeping them and reporting them.
