February 25, 201313 yr The only reason I even watched was to see this. Not enough I Dreamed a Dream for my taste but outstanding none the less. And Samantha Barks looked pretty good as well. [video=youtube_share;FQxbYP83Wdc]http://youtu.be/FQxbYP83Wdc
February 25, 201313 yr Prior to this movie I was not aware of Hugh Jackman's musical skills. Ann Hathaway bugs me. Can't tell you why.

And Samantha Barks looked pretty good as well.I thought it was a little awkward sounding in the group portion, but that may hve been more a function of the sound system set up....and the fact that they let Russell Crowe get on the stage.

February 25, 201313 yr Author Get the 25 anniversary Concert Version !!!!! Superior to the movie !!! I've seen it and you're correct it was very good.
February 25, 201313 yr Take 5 minutes and give this a listen. I really like Colm Wilkinson's (Valjean) "tryout about halfway through.
February 25, 201313 yr Author We disagree on a lot of things, but someone who likes musical theater and Les Mis is okay in my book. Let me tell you how much. When most people go south for Spring Break I'm going north to New York. A Broadway musical is definitely part of the agenda. Going to see the new stage version of Rodger's and Hamerstein's Cinderella. Thought about seeing Wicked for the 10th time but decided to go for something new.
February 26, 201313 yr Prior to this movie I was not aware of Hugh Jackman's musical skills. Ann Hathaway bugs me. Can't tell you why. Hugh Jackman won the Tony about 10 years ago for playing Peter Allen in "the Boy from OZ". He was terrific in that and is a great stage actor.
February 26, 201313 yr I have a confession I can listen to Les Mis in the office all day. Had a class in college that was the appreciation of musicals and been hooked ever since. I am working on my boys without much luck. I guess it will take a female classmate with an interest in a couple of years. LOL

I am working on my boys without much luck. I guess it will take a female classmate with an interest in a couple of years. LOL When I was little, just about the only records in the house were Broadway soundtracks. My mom pretty much had them all. Then my parents started taking me to a place called Painter's Mill Music Fair in Reisterstown (MD); among other things they put on Broadway musicals with (primarily) off-Broadway casts. Saw most of the "classics"; "Porgy and Bess" was probably my favorite. The headliner was generally one of three types: A. Someone on the downhill of a solid movie or stage career. This was most often the case - I can remember seeing Howard Keel, Van Johnson, John Bubbles among others. 2. Someone on the rise. Liza Minelli comes to mind. D. Someone who may have had film roles, but was first and foremost on the stage. Think Anna Maria Alberghetti, John Raitt (Bonnie's dad). Then I became a teenage dopehead and thought that stuff was for sissies. I distinctly remember my parents taking me to the Morris Mechanic theater in Baltimore to see The Nutcracker when I was about 21. I know - not a Broadway production, but I was amazed at the show. Not for sissies after all. Fast forward about 30 years. Daughter took private voice lessons and parlayed that into a nice chunk of scholarship change. The highlight of her high-school musical "career" - Mme. Thenardier in Les Mis. Ask just about anyone who happened to catch Mason County's production in the spring of 2007. It was about as good a "high-school musical" as it gets - a great combination of talent and the right show to showcase said talent. So we still try to catch something at the Aronoff, Lexington Broadway House or the Arts Center in Louisville once a year. Les Mis and Wicked (wonderful show for two powerful female leads) are my personal favorites, but my daughter says that Phantom and The Lion King are just as good in person.

The climactic scene in "Gravity" may be just about the best Broadway moment I've ever seen.
February 26, 201313 yr Author The climactic scene in "Gravity" may be just about the best Broadway moment I've ever seen. Even after 9 times I still get chills when Elphaba belts out Defying Gravity from the platform. Only show that I've been to where I see the audience regularly gives a standing O at the end of the first act. The last time Wicked was in Louisville I was fortunate enough to see both performances on a Sunday. (had to take one for the team and entertain some business clients in the private viewing booth at The KY Center for the matinee then see it again that night with tickets I had previously purchased). Having some time to kill between performances and before dinner I wandered to the stage door and struck up a conversation with a gentleman my age who was standing there who I soon realized had played the wizard. Very friendly man. I told him that that was my 8th time and that I was going to be seeing the show again that evening. While we were talking 2 very attractive young ladies came out, one with the leftovers of green make up around her face. It was the 2 leading actresses. The Wizard asked if I had a camera. I went into fanboy mode and had a picture of me taken standing between Elphaba and Glinda. The photographer was the Wizard. I printed the picture and went back the following Sunday and had all three actors autograph it for me. It's now framed and hanging on the wall in my house and displayed here with strategic edit.
