Note - its reckless if you are not aiming at anything and just using it as a noisemaker it appears. Its not reckless if you are shooting AT someone who is presenting a threat. It appears the lesson is to ignore the VPs advice and wait for the intruders to actually intrude - where shooting them would not be 'reckless' and covered under the castle doctrine laws.

My grandfather told me when he was a little boy that his grandfather (my great great grandfather) had a problem with theives stealing corn from his cornfield. So one night he loaded his shotgun with rock salt and waited in the dark near his barn to try and catch them in the act. For those of you who don't know, a shotgun loaded with rock salt will scatter and pepper you pretty good, but fired from any distance will not kill you.

 

So there he sat in the dark and eventually he heard a commotion near the corn field and knew the theif was at it. So he slipped through his orchard, which borded the corn field, and when he got down close enough he squatted down underneath an apple tree and waited for more noise so he could pinpoint their location. After not hearing anything for quite a few minutes, he decided to just fire a shot in the air to scare them off. To his surprise, the theif on that night was stealing apples, not corn, and he shot him out of the apple tree. LOL

 

He said the theif took off running and hollering and that took care of his problem. My grandfather said years later the man came up to his grandfather and confessed it was him and showed him some scars where the rock salt had "tore him up".

Well, he sort of has point. Letting it be known that you will defend yourself and have the means to do it will keep a lot of bad things from happening.

 

I have an alarm system. It does work. The fact is that is rarely 'armed' except when we are gone on a vacation. But I prominently display the signs for the service outside. Its the signs I count on more than the service itself.

 

If a true home invader was in the house I would rather let loose a 'warning shot' with a .45 that would be loud enough to scare anyone and hope they realize there will be resistance and leave on their own volition. My father keeps a single shot .410 shotgun around his house for that type situation. Criminals that are not crazed on drugs and have some sort of reasoning usually would not want to risk an armed confrontation.
