NFHS rules changes

Featured Replies

No more automatic first down for defensive pass interference. Also, no more loss of down for offensive pass interference. New rule goes into effect 2013 season.

No "Points of Emphasis" that probably won't be enforced right or at all?

Did it say if defensive PI would be enforced from the foul or from the LOS?

Also did you see the additional rules regarding a player losing his helmet?

Glad to see the loss of down on offensive pass interference go away. I always felt that 15 yards plus loss of down was ridiculously devastating.

The only problem I see with the defensive pass interference one though is that if you have say, 3rd or 4th and 25-30 yards to go, anything beyond the 15 yard point you interfere with if you get beat. Especially if it is long.

DPI is enforced from the previous spot. Replay the down.

My thought exactly. 4th and over 20 and I can see coaches telling kids to stop the long pass any way they can.

They really need to let a QB throw the ball away if he's outside the tackles. The Intentional grounding rules in high school prevent the QB from making a smart decision.

Well the according to another thread they would be cheaters and should be investigated!!!

That's a garbage rule and it will go away after this year. As a defensive coach I like any advantage the D can get but not giving an automatic first down on PI is ridiculous. It should be a spot foul and automatic first down. JMO

I wonder how many times this will come into play this coming season????? This is not going to be good.

Most db coaches tell their kids already if you get beat take the dpi or holding penalty. Takes most of the downside of it. I don't think it will be as big of a deal as some are thinking

It is true that they are probably already coached to do that somewhat because it is better to take that than give up a TD. The difference is that now not only would it not be a TD if they are torched, it may not even be a first down. That's the problem.

I agree.

The 2 rules that should be changed is the Intentional grounding rule and the Defensive PI rule.

I think with the PI rule it would be silly for any defense to allow a long pass on 4th and long or 3rd and long knowing that a PI call will not result in a automatic 1st down.

As far as the Intentional grounding rule (or non rule) I did notice this past season many officials letting it go and not calling it when a QB who runs out of the pocket actually does throw the ball out of bounds etc. I think the officials may also think that is a silly rule. In one of our playoff games this year the opposing QB threw the ball away (out of bounds) about 6 times when chased out of the pocket and about to take a sack and not once was there a flag thrown. I don't have a problem at all with throwing the ball away and they should re-address that rule.
