February 9, 201313 yr Author She introduced a bill that no rational person believes has a snowball's chance in hell of passing. When will people start looking at such legislation with objectivity? And, yeah...the NRA's "they're gonna take your guns" message is loud, clear and pure hyperbole designed to incite. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner And no worse then the hyperbole used by the left in their whole war on women crusade. No one threatened to take away anyone's birth control pills but with the way the left talked you would have thought every fertile woman in the country was going to become a baby factory. Which brings me back to the original question I asked an RM. If you favor limits on gun ownership are you also OK with limits placed on the ability to get an abortion? February 9, 201313 yr As of now the right to each has been affirmed by the Supreme Court so let's not even discuss that. There are currently 2 pieces of legislation that have been filed in Frankfort, 1 in the House, 1 in the Senate. While both have a chance of passing their originating chamber neither is likely to even get a committee hearing in the other. The House bill is a gun measure that while not limiting gun ownership will make it more onerous to purchase a gun. The Senate bill is an abortion bill that would not limit the right to abortion, but it would require an ultrasound prior to the procedure. I'll ask this of both sides, if limiting what has been upheld by the Supreme Court to be a constitutional right for one is acceptable how is it unacceptable to make limitations on what has been upheld as a constitutional right for the other? You know what side I stand on, I'll use the left's rhetoric. If the ultrasound requirement will save even 1 baby isn't it worth enacting that restriction? A universal background check treats law-abiding citizens like criminals by forcing them to prove their innocence to government bureaucrats just to engage in commerce. If you can't trust someone with a firearm, then they shouldn't be on the streets in the first place. Felons can still buy a box of matches and a bucks worth of gas, but we tell them they can't provide their own effective means of self-defense, or vote. This is unconstitutional because it prevents individuals from exercising their Right to Bear Arms. Abortion is sinful and abhorring. From conception on, the potential of life exists and during this time that developing organism is susceptible to life and death. If that organism is susceptible to life and death, then that organism has every right to it's life. Why don't we call abortion for what it actually is? Murder.
February 10, 201313 yr Actually, the topic includes abortion rights as well. But, I am not the one who introduced the generalization of taxes, I just tried to pin point where you guys are on specific other taxes to gauge whether the taxes proposed in the gun legislation is the issue, or if (as stated by other posters) increased taxes already in place outrage you all as well. I'm not seeing the same level of outrage. For the record, I am totally fine with all of the existing, as well as the proposed. If I want to purchase whatever is wanted, I will pay the increased tax. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner Because its a gun thread....there was no reason for me to bring up other taxes. When you mentioned tobacco, I thought I made it clear it was bad for middle america. Can you explain why you are so passive about our government taking money from the private sector? I just don't understand it. That's someones hard earned money and you have no problem with taxing them more, most likely because you won't be paying it, but good lord. Aren't middle income Americans taxed enough? Again, this tax doesn't solve anything......so where is the justification.

I don't mind paying more taxes for that hypothetical gun and ammo I will never buy. At least I have a choice of whether I pay that tax or not. I choose to pay the extra taxes on alcohol. I don't on guns and ammo. It's not a blanket tax. It's only if you choose to buy the product.

I'm pretty sure I start majority of the threads regarding the absurdity of how our tax dollars are spent on military. I have a huge problem with the government taking your money, as if it was theirs to begin with. You have yet to provide the justification of this tax, and how it solves anything. You have no problem with it, but its extremely selfish and immoral for you to be so taking with someone elses property.

Sent from my DROID X2 using Forum Runner That is what I'm saying, RM. I don't know what ammo, tobacco, or alcohol taxes serve. That is the absurdity. If you do, explain it. All I hear you saying is the government passed a law for higher taxes, therefore its just, and everyone should comply without question.

February 10, 201313 yr This is how we lose our freedoms. Amazing how people don't even blink anymore. I don't believe anyone is losing any freedoms. They'll simply be paying an increased tax. To lose the freedom, a Constitutional Amendment would be required to repeal the 2nd. That's not even proposed.

All I hear you saying is the government passed a law for higher taxes, therefore its just, and everyone should comply without question. There is a price to pay for many things in a free society. This is just one example. I don't have a problem with it because I don't feel it's unjust. What I see is that a person can still excercise their constitutional right. They'll just pay a little more to do so. They can choose to do so, or they can choose not to. But in the end, it is the choice of the individual. I in no way feel that an increaed tax will prevent anyone from owning a firearm if they so choose. One determines what they feel is needd, or a priority, and save for that purchase, or have the means at hand to pay for it. The tax will not prevent that purchase.

February 10, 201313 yr We should be focused on all factors. No question. Didn't say otherwise. True, but our Government is not doing it. Guns, guns, guns. The President barely touches on the other main issues just to include it, and it's an all out blitz to blame it on the guns to get what he wanted all along. Can't sugarcoat it. That's what got us to where we are now.
