Letting A Player Get Points To Achieve A Milestone

Featured Replies

Not sure which side of this I fall,

but some years back I remember Boone Co's Fookes, did everything she could to keep a Ryle Senior from reaching that milestone.

I think this was an incredibly classy move to allow this to happen,----

However I think 13 points was a little much. Maximum of 5 would be it for me.

His story for the future is not about 1000 pts but about the kindness of the human spirit of an arch rival. Now that is something to tell your grandchildren about. 13 points seem to be on the maximum side of the can do but it makes for nice copy. I'd rather be the giver than the receiver of this gift.

EXACTLY!!!!

How many were up in arms in the football forum when the opposing team let the kid with Down's Syndrome score the touchdown? Can't recall the purists banging the statistical drum on that one.

Nice gesture. Yes. Kudos to all involved.

I still think that there is too much emphasis put on the "1000 point club".

How about a 500 rebound club?

I was thinking of that this morning!

What's the big deal? Better yet, how many who are complaining are from Trimble Co? Or a player from Carroll Co that is ticked off that they "worked their butt off too" as was mentioned? I don't see any of them complaining.....

It's not a purist argument in the basketball case. I had NO problem with the example above. That kid has already learned about life's lessons and he's been on the down side of them. The basketball kid hurt his knee.

Still waiting for Spindoc and others to tell me how many is too many. It's easy to say "it's a nice gesture. YAY!" It's not easy to answer the "too many" question.

Totally different story.

Already did. In this case the kid's avg was 20. If I was the coach, I'd have been cool with that.

Totally different story.

Still screwed up the stats. yard/game, scoring avg., yards/pts given up. All still just stats. And in the end, both were yielded for the benefit of a kid who for whatever reason was disabled. One born with it, one temporarily. Seems a double standard and pokes holes in the argument that it skews the stats.

It can't just be a good hearted gesture to reach out to a kid by an opposing coach, of a rival team no less? Wow. We've lost our grip.

They had fruit roll ups during half time and each kid got a trophy for participation after the game.

I'm not really as callous about this as I appear to be. Just joking with the above comment. I Just feel staying injury free is part of the process. How many times did we see posts this year that said "If little Johnny was healthy we would have won by 20"?

I think there's a far bigger picture here especially given the relationship of the opposing coach and the player and their history. I just don't find it appalling or somehow cheapening the game. I see it as more selfless. Perhaps there's even a greater lesson for those not injured about how fragile each moment is. Maybe there was some real emotional involvement for the participants when they realized it could have easily been them. I just don't see how it could be seen as something negative, yet that's the world we live in.

15 points would be too many.
