Getting back to thee original thread. I would have thought maybe one of the CovCath teams from the Late 60's to early 70's that won 5 regionals in a row or the Holmes teams of the Late 70's that won 4 in 5 years might have won all three regionals. Even the Jack Jennings and Pouncy teams of the late 80's might have done it .

Maybe the Highlands team that year could have been called the Kenton County Bluebirds with Draud, Lankeit and Maile all in the starting lineup to go along with Bob Burkart and Mike "Big Bird" Moore.

 

I didn't think Draud started with this group. I think Beagle played a lot. He was from Boone Co. There goes your whole Kenton Co theory.

 

The sixth and final NCC victory (and it was NCC beginning in 1983/84) was the infamous hack-a-bird game. HHS had the Breds beat in the regional game and NCC resorted to fouling Mike Moore away from the ball and sending him to the line. Mike struggled making free throws. Shields had to remove Moore from the game. NCC overcame the deficit after several missed free throws and then HHS not having the 6'6" presence in the game.

I don't know if 1983-84 was chosen as the starting point for any particular reason, but in 1978 Holmes boys were regional champs (state runner up), JV was undefeated and, de facto regional champs (I don't think they had a tournament then), the boys frosh were conference champions, and the girls varsity were conference champions. For a long time, there were trophies and pictures of those four teams displayed together at Holmes. Eighth grade team that year was very good also (don't know what league or conference they would have been champions of), but interesting note to re-ignite the debate.... 1978 Holmes eighth grade team include future Kenton County Bluebird star Fred Terry.

Finding your opponents weakness, is always key, if you want a chance at winning in anything. It's like a scab, pick it till it bleeds!

 

It would be really neat to be able to watch these games once again. They were always a battle.

Was thinking about this last night on the way back from the All A Tourney in Frankfort.

 

Other than the 1983-84 Newport Catholic basketball program, as any other NKY team since then won all 3 Regional Titles in the same year? For the sake of this topic the JV & Frosh tourneys will be called Regional.

 

The 3 teams that year combine for a record of 78-5.

 

The Varsity team went 33-2, and only lost to #1 ranked Cincinnati Elder 65-56 in the regular season and then as the #1 ranked team in the state lost to (14-16) Scott Co. 59-52 in the opening round of the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp. The Breds picked the wrong game to have an awful shooting performance, 23-59 from the floor and 6-15 from the charity stripe. Scott Co. benefited from the FT line going 23-37. The Breds were Champs of the N.I.T, L.I.T, Famous Recipe Classic, 35th Dist. & 9th Region.

 

The JV team that season went 20-3 and was winner of the JV Regional.

The Frosh went undefeated with a record of 25-0 and won the Fr. Regional.

 

Varsity starters:

Jimmy Pangallo, Marty Sandfoss, Jay Thiem, Bob Schenk, & Steve Butcher

Bench: Bobby Gesenhues, Dan Albrink, Steve Klump

 

JV starters:

Thank you, I had to dig deep into my 10 year old memory and I just couldn't grasp his last name. Talking about anguish, it drove me nuts trying to remember his last name.

 

That was a good tournament, Fred Tisdale, Steve Miller, Jeff Blandon, Royce Arena. Those were great times during my chidhood. I still remember the Henry Clay Band playing with the chant, "Go Devils".

 

Was NCC 34-1 going into that game?
