Thank you, I had to dig deep into my 10 year old memory and I just couldn't grasp his last name. Talking about anguish, it drove me nuts trying to remember his last name.

 

That was a good tournament, Fred Tisdale, Steve Miller, Jeff Blandon, Royce Arena. Those were great times during my chidhood. I still remember the Henry Clay Band playing with the chant, "Go Devils".

 

Was NCC 34-1 going into that game?

 

NCC was 33-1 going into the state tourney in 1984.

He's my uncle's nephew (obviously on the other side of the family.) Great dude, and I've heard tons of stories about that Bourbon County run. I think that they had a losing record going into the Sweet 16.

1974 NewCath won the Frosh and Varsity. I don't know about the regional.

Additional Information: Gary lives in Milford with his wife Cathy who works at Pattison Elementary as an instructional aide. They have 3 grown children with four grandchildren. Gary was a math teacher at Milford High School for 4 years before becoming an elementary principal for 10 years in the district. He and his wife enjoy spending time with their grandkids.

I didn't think Draud started with this group. I think Beagle played a lot. He was from Boone Co. There goes your whole Kenton Co theory.

Blasingame played for the '86 and '87 Regional HHS champs - did not play varsity for '85 HHS - although he may have dressed. Also, you mentioned the Scott County Frank Persley-led team. In 1985 - they rolled into HHS gym as defending state champs and #1 or #2 rated in state...and the Birds pulled an upset win on Draud (shocking) last second jumper, only to get THUMPED the very next morning by better Campbell team. The HHS '85 team lost to (3) teams - all season long. Unfortunately, they lost 7 times - no kiddin - to two of them! Campbell and Newport. (including pre-season tourney, famous recipe, home/away season games, districts and regional loss). They lost once to Boone Co. on Boone's floor also - and Boone eventually won Regional by 1 over Newport. In Regional Semi's- HHS had Newport down 10 points - only to lose on a brilliant Newport coaching move to intentionally foul HHS Junior Schuett with about :12 seconds remaining to put him on line with game tied. Brilliant. Never saw it coming...we were stalling out front ...dribblin away...waiting for last second shot...passed the ball to corner - went to retrieve it and they tackled Schuett into the benches - brilliant. You gonna wait for Draud to decide your fate? Nope. He missed front-end of bonus FT - Newport's Commodore grabs it and streaks up court - HHS panicks and Beagle grabs him at half-court. He drains both and Newport heads to finals. Coaching. Discuss EVERYTHING. Especially last minute.

Believe it was in Campbell Co MS. They rotated years between Holmes, Conner, and CC.

It was a Campbell County. I remember Greg Kowolonek playing for that Newport team.
