Officials: Panetta opens combat roles to women

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior defense officials say Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is removing the military's ban on women serving in combat, opening hundreds of thousands of front-line positions and potentially elite commando jobs after more than a decade at war.

 

 

 

I'm not the hugest fan of women in combat. Its not black and white for me.

 

Thoughts?

Physical standards for women in basic training are lower for women , correct? Does this mean women will go into combat with lower physical abilities or are combat strengths higher and will women be required to meet those standards?

If a woman wants to fight in combat for America I'm not going to stop her nor am I against it. Do your thing, girl!!!!

This is exactly why I'm not completely sold on the idea yet. If the same standards are required for both men and women, I say more power to ya. If the standards are lower, than I'm not sure I can get on board. We shall see I guess.

Another point to consider, are we ready to deal what might happen to women if they become POWs?

I do not believe we are ready for some the horror stories we could potentially hear.

I was getting ready to post that. The first time a woman is capured and raped I see this policy being revisited.

If a women is willing to take the risks, there should be nothing to prevent her, other than any established criteria that her own abilities may not meet.

I was wondering the same thing when I heard this on the radio today.

I don't disagree but you know as well as I do WHEN (not if) a woman soldier is raped and killed the media will play that up more then anything that has happened to any man.

No but I don't believe it has or will illicit the same reaction that women being raped will cause. Again I don't disagree with the change in policy I just wonder about the reaction when something like this happens.
