No can do, imo. They better be happy with a 1 point win, but I don't see that happening.

I disagree. Owsley County played well against South Floyd Saturday and looked like they are coming together as a team. Smith is slowly getting adjusted to his teammates, and Neeley looked much better.

The game before, Owsley led Hazard until the last 2 minutes when Smith fouled out and Hazard won by their largest lead of the night, 52-44.......and the Owls actually didn't play very well against the Bulldogs, shooting a low percentage. Owsley led the Bulldogs at one time by 13 points.

 

My prediction is a close game. June Buchanan will be very fortunate to get out of Booneville with a win. As a matter of fact....I don't think they will. This Owsley team is totally different than the one that lost game after game in December and early January.

From my understanding their 6'8 center is not really a scoring option for them, he is used mostly for defensive purposes. Owsley's worries will be with Stepp and Cox. Owsley has a 6'6 center, Kevin Riley, but this is his first year of basketball and he is learning with every game.

 

But the Crusaders will have their problems, too, in stopping Daniel Neeley (one of the best 3 point shooters in the region when he's healthy),Robert Smith ( a great slasher/scorer...great one on one player), and Congleton (can knock down the 3 and is a good rebounder and finisher). The Owls also have strong rebounders in Dustin Wilson and Josh Reed, who are both young (neither played last year), but are gaining confidence every game. Another sophomore, Matt Wright, has shown potential this season.

 

I think the shot in the arm this team needed was getting Robert Smith in the lineup. He is the only senior on the team, and has brought a calming effect to the younger kids.

 

You are right in that sometimes Collins does not score that much on the offensive end but the games I have watched them he is not needed to score.I think I saw in a boxscore that he had 16 against Henry Clay. The games I have watched him he has been unstoppable under the basket, they just didnt get enough shots to him. Jbs runs alot of fast breaks and he gets left out of the offensive picture. Good luck to both teams...

I think you hit it right on the head. The Owls proved against Hazard that they can go inside or score outside based on the teams defense. Robert Smith is an outstanding player and he is playing better than he ever has, by being more of a team player, playing very unselfishly. If Robert isn't scoring, you have to watch out for Daniel Neeley and Trey Congleton from the outside. From the inside you have Dustin Wilson, which was the leading scorer against Hazard. Josh Reed is definitely a threat off the bench. Kevin Riley is a young player, getting varsity time since Christmas Break and as you said, he is improving every game. I feel that the Owls are very confident right now and will pull this win off.....but by a slim margin, but as you said, a win is a win.......... :ylsuper:

I'm not underestimating him. I've talked to a few people who have seen JBS. Collins, I'm told, is a great defensive player who allows nothing from the offense in the paint. If that's true, then that makes this game an outside scoring contest. Of course, Collins may go off and hit Owsley for 40 for all I know. But what I' hearing is Stepp and Cox compose most of the offense for JBS.

Does Owsley have anyone that can stop June Buchanans 6'8" center?

 

 

 

Collins isn't much of a offensive threat from when i saw him play this summer and he was a good defensive player.

Maybe good coach, as in the assistant on the bench does the coaching, the head coach just relays it to the floor, sometimes. I'm not criticizing, it's just an observation by several people, but it seems to work ok.

I think the prof. is right on track. Owsley might not have a 6'8 player inside but JBS doesn't have two 6'2 guards that can go inside and out. Robert or Trey pose a match up problem for anyone. Put a guard on them they go in, put a big man on them and they will face him up and take him to the basket. Daniel is one of the best shooters in the region. JBS will have their hands full. Owsley should pull this one out.

Your big man is no match for Collins. I doubt that your guards can handle Stepp and Cox. Stepp is 6'2" at least and Cox is 5'10.5 and a very smart player. He gets more rebounds than most big men. He is 8th in the state on free throws . Stepp is 8th in the state on scoring. I guess we will have to wait and see. I don't like to predict winners. JBS guards can go inside and out.

I agree with you Flash about the coaching on this team. IMO everyone knows who is in charge of the bball program. This is by far my least favorite team and coaching staff in the region.

With that said Owlsley has no answer for Collins or Stepp. Smith is outstanding offensive player but not much help on the defensive end. I hope the Owls win with all my heart but my head says JBS in a rout.
