Suprised to see Howard leads the state in boards. I know all teams don't send them in but 14/game is great. I believe they also said Penick was 2nd with over 13 per game.

I am not doubting the Howard and Penick kids can play... they seem to be legit but I will say Statistics are for morons....Back when I played in the late 80's.... we had a guy who was a great rebounder but the statistician was a girl he used to date. He was like 2nd in the region in Boards with a 11.8 avg.... and we used to watch game films and I never counted more than 10 a game.... so you make your own assumptions.....in fact, the girl I think dated half the team at one point so all of our stats were great !!!! : )

I have just a few points to make.

1. I'd throw Todd Jacobs performance in against Western Hills @NKU during the Bluegrass/Buckeye Classic. I think he had 36-38 and had 7 3pters. I'd also throw in Edmondsons 35 with 9 3pters agains Campbell Co.

2. My most underrated has to be Vories. Even if he's the most clutch, I'd still think Jeff Vories doesn't get enough praise. His team is full of roll players and he is one the one guy that makes this team scary good.

3. Agree with Pep Band, Not even close. Shaun's Brother Duran Alexander does an amazing job. They are always the best. I love when CCH boys cheered at the boone game, YOUR BAND IS BETTER.

4. My biggest suprise is Beechwood. They've beat Ryle, Newport, Ludlow, and Morgan Co. Had good showings against CCH, Holmes and #1 South Laurel. Nice job Tigers!!

Lets Talk Stats

There are very few teams who have stat people who know what they are really doing these days. Assist are very rarely kept correctly. Rebounds aren't added right. Turnovers are never correct. Alot of teams don't believe or use BLOCKS as a stat. There needs to be a better way of collecting this data. I think its the KHSAA jobs to do take care of this. I'm seeing alot of wack stats in the past few years. And I agree its not the easiest job, but its not that hard to take care of either.

I keep stats on most ocassions for Ludlow at away games. I have other responsibilities at home games. I know full well what a rebound and an assist is and feel that I'm very accurate when I keep the stats. Kept the stats the night Penick had those 27 rebounds. He got every one of them and I may have missed one or two.

NKBOY1487 maybe if you don't mind you could do a better job then me of explaining to those who aren't so certain exactly what constitutes a rebound and especially an assist. Thanks..

I always thought I knew what an assist was too, but I'd like to hear others explanations; or at least an official defination??

I agree with you here. Everyone uses different rules. I've always used if the person making the pass gets rewarded if the shooter makes a basket with using less then two basketball moves. So 2 steps, 2 dribbles, and what not.

I don't agree that CCH has had the best backcourt.

I'll take Holmes.

What about a breakaway, where the rebounder finds his man open, and hits him near mid-court or thereabouts, but it may take a 3 dribbles or steps to get to the bucket??

Certainly a good argument, and one I've heard discussed already.

There are exceptions such as the break away, I might be able to let that go. But if he dribble to much I don't think of it as an assist.

The KHSAA needs to give statiscians clear cut rules to go by each game and make them know the rules. So all teams are playing by the same rules.

With Timmy T being out for a majority of this half, you could make an argument HHS and HC had more conisistent backcourt play.

To me an assist is any pass which contributes directly to a basket. There is a misconception involving dribbles. Many believe that if a dribble is involved no assist should be credited-this is incorrect.Use this example-your big man grabs a def. reb. and throws a perfect outlet to the a guard streaking down the court. The guard catches the ball in full stride 15 feet from the bucket without a def. man in sight and takes a dribble and lays it in-that is an assist. However let us assume the streaking guard misses the shot and puts his own rebound in-that is not an assist even though I understand people have been credited with one. Also no assist can be given to someone who makes both free throws after a great pass is made to set up the free throws.By the same token if a pass is made to a shooter who head/jab fakes several times and then makes a basket an assist is not necessarily in order. If one looks over the history of how assists are credited I'm sure that you will see that the definition has became more "liberal" over the years. For instance I believe Larry Conley let UK in assists for three consecutive years in the mid-60s and never avg. more than 3.3 per yr. and one year was below 3.0.Just as most career and individual rebound records were set 40-50 years at many schools most assist records have happened in the last 10-15 years.

Good examples, my friend. The 'dribble rule' is the biggest misperception about the awarding of an assist. Its obviously a subjective stat (unlike a rebound) and that's why you have to take the stats awarded with a grain of salt. Not everyone knows how to award them. Unlike Ludlow with BZ, many times stats are kept by high schoolers. Some know what they're doing. Some do not.

Here's something that 99.9% don't realize: The assist does not have to be for the LAST pass before the basket. The stat is awarded to the pass that made the basket possible. It could be the preceding pass.

By the way, if I'm the PG with a great 3 pt shooter, I guarantee you that my assist stats do not accurately portray my ability to get my teammates good shots. If a team is sitting back in a tight 2-3 zone and I'm simply making a pass to the wing and the wing drops a shot, I get an assist, right? Did I do anything special or challenging?
