Replay controversy in Arizona

Featured Replies

I don't know what words they told the coaches.

I know this. The official responsible for the good/no good call is always the one that is opposite the table. He never signaled that it beat the clock. He raise his hand when the shooter went up with the shot to indicate that it was a 3 attempt and then he raised his second hand to indicate the shot went in. That does not tell us he thought the shot beat the clock. He never gave any signal to say "count it."

Is that really you Sean Miller?

Apparently not because Miller has even said "the refs called it good, then waived it off."

I know you are getting down to rule specifics Clyde, but I have yet to read anywhere - despite what typical calling a shot good or bad protocol may be - that says the refs upheld their position. Aren't the refs supposed to rule one way or another before going to the replay? I honestly do not know, just under the impression they had to and had to use the whole "conclusive evidence" argument.

The refs didnt take a position. None do when they know they will be Going to the monitor.

So why do they keep going with the "conclusive argument" thing? Just a lack of knowledge. Apparently the coaches and scorekeepers are not aware of it either

Not sure what you are asking.

This was bad; no idea how that three pointer didn't count.

The view I saw on TV last night showed the backboard clock in the background of his shot. At 0.1 seconds, the ball has just barely, but still very clearly, left his fingertips. As soon as the clock strikes 0.0 and the backboard lights up, the ball is a good distance away from his hand. The call the refs made after watching replay was just sad. I really feel for this Colorado team. That would have been a marquee victory in helping them make the Big Dance. They got screwed over in this one.

Still unsure how they could possibly make that call after watching the replays.

The head of officiating for the conference and the NCAA both said the decision was correct. Both said they looked at the replay that the officials looked at. It would be nice if we knew exactly what replay angle they used.

Before you say "of course they'd say that" they didn't back their boys in the UConn/Marquette game this week. They said the officials erred.

The officials need to be reprimanded and severely, but not necessarily just because they screwed Colorado royally. On a free throw late by Colorado both Colorado and Arizona subbed after a foul that had immediately followed a timeout with no time running off the clock. The officals got together and made the Colorado player exit the game. Arizona's sub (Solomon Hill (best player)) was allowed to stay on the floor and hit a subsequent 3 pointer on the very next trip down the court. Just abysmal officiating entire game.

Agreed overall. The 3-point shot is debatable depending on what they actually looked at.

In OT the first basket (or maybe 2nd) for UA was actually a violation by Lyons. He drove, got contact, and the ball came out of his hands. He then picked it up and shot it where it was rebounded by AU and put in. Problem was there was no defender that hit the ball out of Lyons hands. You can't jump, release the ball, and then go get it if it wasn't a shot attempt. No way you can call that a shot attempt.

One could also argue that they missed 2 intentional fouls on CU . One was late 2nd half. The other was in OT.

I thought the red light on backboard was actually official instead of clock , and yes the official opposite scorers table marked the 3 point shot (per highlights I saw on ESPN).

You are correct. He signaled a 3 was made.

How do they explain the ball being out of his hand before the backboard light comes on, and it being the correct call?

Did that play have any effect on Uconn-Marquette?

Easy to see why they went with the Refs in the Zona game

I'm not sure if that's rhetorical so..

It didn't have a win/no-win at the buzzer impact. One could argue that it could have gotten momentum started like UA got strong momentum going in OT against CU.
