10 Notes From The 10th Region (Reviewing Week 5)

1. It was a week of significant accomplishment for two of the region's most decorated stars--perhaps the top two stars. Just a day after Christmas, Augusta guard Brent Bach scored his 1,000th career point in his team's dramatic comeback win vs. Iroquois. The junior guard scored 19 of his game-high 35 points in the 4th quarter, helping the Panthers storm back from a 21-point second half deficit.

2. The next day it was Montgomery County star swingman Omar Prewitt who scored his 2,000th career point in a convincing home win vs. East Carter. Never one to rest on his laurels, Prewitt went out the very next night & dropped 31 points in a 17-point victory over Worthington Kilbourne (OH).

3. Staying with the milestone scoring mark storyline, look for a couple of other 10th Region standouts to join the ranks. Harrison County junior forward Dillon Pulliam currently stands at 992 career points, while Bishop Brossart senior Justin Saunders sits just 31 points shy of the 1,000 barrier. The Breds & Stangs both play two games this week.

4. Four 10th Region squads traveled to Lexington in last week's Republic Bank Classic: Bishop Brossart, George Rogers Clark, Scott, & Bourbon County. Mike Code's Mustangs started the tourney off in impressive fashion, scoring victories over Oldham County & Perry County Central. Unfortunately, the squad stumbled at the end, losing to a pair of games by 4 points to out-of-state teams (Roger Bacon, Ohio & Fayette County, Georgia).

5. Scott continued its season of schizophrenia, winning convincingly over fellow region participant Bourbon County by a score of 80-58 and then getting drilled by Dixie Heights (59-40) the next day. The Eagles began the tournament by not making the trip down I-75, presumably due to weather conditions. Regardless, this has been a difficult team to figure out all season long.

6. Despite receiving consistent performance from Snoop Johnson, Bourbon County was winless in the RBC. Fellow 40th District participant George Rogers Clark, on the other hand, continued to improve. Scott Humprey's Cards ended up winning 2 of 3 games, including an overtime thriller vs. Paintsville. Fans of the 10th were deprived, however, of a George Rogers Clark/Bishop Brossart matchup, even though the bracket had the two opposite each other on day 3. For reasons we do not fully know, the brackets were changed at basically the last minute.

7. Harrison County spent its post-Christmas days playing in the Lake Cumberland Hoops Classic. The Breds played four games, splitting its win/loss record. Larry Kendall's squad should get a pair of victories this week (Bracken County & Paris) before taking on more difficult region competition in the next few weeks (George Rogers Clark, Augusta, & Campbell County).

8. Speaking of Campbell County, the Camels turned in a disappointing performance in its lone game last week. St. Henry put away the Camels in convincing fashion, winning by a score of 63-48. Aric Russell hopes the New Year sees the return of Nate McGovney, who has been sidelined nearly all season with injury problems. If the senior standout does return, it'll be just in time for two big regional home games--Wednesday vs. Mason County and Saturday vs. Bishop Brossart.

9. Chris O'Hearn's Mason County team had a decent week, going 2-1 in the Campbellsville University Holiday Classic. The Royals continue to get solid performances from junior big man Shawn Johnson, who is proving to be one of the 10th's best overall players.

10. The start of 2013 brings us closer to the 10th Region Class A tournament, which will be held January 14th-19th in the first-class facility at Nicholas County. Look for a Class A preview in the next week or so, but this year appears to be a particularly weak field outside of Bishop Brossart & Augusta.

Saunders 31 points shy at time of this writing; not 30

Also in the Gateway Classic, Bryan Wallace and Omar Prewitt were named to the All Tournament Team. Were any other 10th region players named to a All tourney team in the tourney's they played in?

I think before all is said and done that Mr. Bach has a great chance to reach 2,000.

Agreed.

Considering he was at around 600 points when this season began, and he passed 1000 BEFORE January, I'd say 2000 is nearly a lock.

Nice write-up, Randy! Love all the details including the individual player success stories.
