December 23, 201213 yr Not what I said and I feel like that's an entirely different argument. There are certain places where carrying isn't allowed for good reason. One reason is because the police presence tends to be high in those areas. To narrow my response, I believe guns shouldn't be allowed in schools for what I feel are good reasons....as I outlined previously.
December 23, 201213 yr Wow. I never said anyone was smarter or more practical. I was just trying to understand how you would feel safer in a place where only criminals had guns. Yet you state you are protecting me....implying that people like myself can't protect ourselves without your gun.
December 23, 201213 yr I know that police or military are highly trained so no, and are much more closely monitored, I don't. There's no such training requirement for Joe or Josephine Public. On the flip side, if there are police or military present in a specific establishment, I take that to mean that it's not necessarily a safe place. So I do, and would, avoid such an establishment. I didn't think I put words in your mouth and apologize if I did. I thought your position was that people should be allowed to carry. Period. I took that to mean anywhere. And I don't see anyone suggesting that teachers be as highly trained as police. Are you against more police presence in schools? You don't think police stations or courthouses are safe? Do you walk out of a movie theater if a police officer is standing at the entrance working security? Sporting events? Why do these places get police security but many are against giving the same security to kids in schools?
December 23, 201213 yr All of you imply that when you suggest that your ability to carry somehow supersedes my belief that fewer arms is safer. I know I'm not the only person on Earth....are you now saying I'm not thinking of others when I object to more armed citizens in the US? I believe I have the right to carry a firearm. I also believe you have the right not to. How does that mean I think I'm smarter or more practical than you? You want to make me do something I don't want to do (give up my gun). Im not asking you to give up anything. You can go on not carrying all you want. You said you don't want to be protected. That's fine but what about those who do?

Why do these places get police security but many are against giving the same security to kids in schools? I am undecided on police presence in schools. I understand the need in some schools. But I would never choose as a school for my kids, one of that it was required. Courthouses and police stations are not particularly safe, in my opinion. And I understand your comment about sporting events and movie theaters. I don't feel BETTER about them being there. But I definitely would avoid those places if I knew any person that was allowed entry could be carrying a gun.

That's fine but what about those who do? I honestly assume if a person wants to be protected, they will either be carrying themselves or trusting in the safety measures of establishment. I personally know no one who is against more guns, but hoping for a random armed person to come to their rescue.

What makes courthouses and police stations unsafe?
December 23, 201213 yr Yet you state you are protecting me....implying that people like myself can't protect ourselves without your gun. I never stated that I was protecting anyone. I don't carry my gun in public...yet. What I did say is that someone that does carry usually is willing to protect everyone in their vicinity, whether they ask for it or not, even though it makes them a greater target, once they return fire. But at least they aren't a sitting target. I would never in a million years want someone to carry that does NOT want to do so. I would never want people in certain areas, such as schools, to be able to carry at will without being highly trained and frequently evaluated. I have been teaching for 17 years. That's through Heath High School, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook and 35 other school shootings. I find myself all too frequently going over my plan of defense for my students in the event that our school came under attack by a gunman. I can't have a gun, so as a chemistry teacher, I have some other creative lines of defense and I would gladly put myself in harms way to protect each and every one of my kids, whether their parents would ask me to or not. I hope that the teachers of my nieces and nephews are prepared to do the same, though in most classrooms, beyond throwing a tape dispenser or a history book, I'm not sure what they could do. I guess they could be like professor at Virginia Tech that held the door long enough that several of his students escaped through windows, before the shooter gained entrance and killed the professor and remaining students. I would ask of you, if you don't promote an armed presence in my (or any) school, how would you recommend that we protect our students against a gunman?
December 23, 201213 yr The prospect of teachers packing heat terrifies me. The notion that three hundred million guns aren't nearly enough boggles the mind. Having more of them in the schools - with extraordinarily limited exceptions - doesn't put me at ease at all. Yet another slippery slope - one which my NRA card-carrying friends would love to slide down. Child care centers next? Den mothers? It's happening in Utah. Seems to be working out pretty well. BTW, I'm not a NRA member. Shocking, I know.
December 23, 201213 yr Does everyone realize there are more places to buy a gun in the US than grocery stores? Oh, how horrible.
December 23, 201213 yr And just so everyone knows, I used to be on the other side of the fence on this matter. (Ask RTS) True story! Glad you came around, gives me hope for others.
December 23, 201213 yr My point is that arming more people in general does not not ensure safety. It actually puts people in more danger, in my opinion. It opens up doors to even more shootings...by the very people we are arming. Statistics say you're wrong.
December 23, 201213 yr I will not change my position. You guys may scoff and eschew all you like. There is no good to come of it, and frankly, we should be outraged that this is the "go-to" answer, instead of the absolute last resort. As so many of you point out, guns don't kill people, people kill people. And you want to give people who are not trained intensively on an ongoing, accountable basis guns, in an environment with the most vulnerable. And not one mention has been made in training the teachers in crisis situations and crisis management.

I value and am interested in your opinion, but I guess that you don't need to answer my questions if you don't want to. I will add that teachers at my school are trained in a variety of crisis management situations, including what to do in the event of a person entering the building with intent to do harm. I'd be interested in hearing what additional/specific training you would want us to have.
