Is Saunders hurt?

 

Justin took a spill in the Highlands game last Friday night and landed on his tail bone.

 

Was still sore going into the Newport game, but gave it a go. Tightened up on him at halftime, and he sat out the final fourteen minutes of the game. He will undoubtedly sit out the Calvary game tonight giving him nine days to recover before our next outing in the Republic Bank Classic at LexCath on the 26th. He will be fine.

If I was a coach that came to scout Newport I would have left with only "plays hard most of the time" on my report. Zero chance you can put down on paper anything they do offensively.

 

I did not attend this game but I've seen both teams play, (BB once, and Newport three times). I'm not at all surprised by the outcome, but am going to guess that Newport's lack of ability to do anything offensively, as Clyde has stated, is largely due to BB's tough 'D'. I have to imagine that they were terribly thrown off by the well-oiled machine that is BB. I believe that Newport will be able to stay with most teams in the 9th, as they've already shown, and I can't say with any certainty that they execute much in the ways of offensive sets, however they typically execute with a well rounded team effort with dynamic guard play that ultimately aims at getting the ball to Short and Pearson, and the two of them are truly excellent players with Short's ability to create his own shot anywhere on the court, and Pearson's strong ability to find his own open lanes to the basket and connect with vigor when he's close to the rim. I believe that if you get the chance to see them play a team other than BB you might come away with an entirely different impression. Any other team, except for perhaps NewCath who might also give Newport the similar type fits that BB must have.

Our stats folks have him for 6 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. He also had 5 or 6 blocked shots vs Highlands Friday night.

I can answer that with an emphatic YES. However, they have a tough District so I think the Stangs will not be talking about this much during the season. Campbell Co has had their number the past couple yrs but this team has as good a 5 starters as any in the 10th.

Do they have the athletes to match up with MCHS? If I remember correctly, their guard play was spotty last year.

There are way to many games prior to a possible matchup with MCHS. Next up is Oldham County at Lexington Catholic. We will know more as the season progresses. So far, I like what I have seen. As for this fan, I would love nothing more than to be playing MCHS - That means BBHS is in the Regional Tourny and at the Fieldhouse once again.

 

But back to this thread. BBHS guards and the whole team played very well against a very athletic team. Newport has some talented players. As previously stated, game was closer then final score.

The guards they have are fantastic defenders, that being said, I think I heard the Mustang guards had ZERO turnovers against Newport? They have been very steady with the ball all year. While none of the 3 are typically big scorers. I know Uebel had 5 threes one night, Rieger has led the team in scoring one or two nights and Jake Jennings is a threat from outside or slashing to the hoop. Very impressed with the guard play so far. I know that the Brossart faithful know better than to look ahead. They know that thier district is one of the hardest to get out of. They will stay focused on the next game ahead and continue to work as hard as always.

Couldn't agree more. I saw the Newport game and was extremely impressed with Trentman, Berns and the floor play of Rieger. At one stretch he had several rebounds, deflections, assists and steals. Very poised player.

If I remember correctly, these Brossart Jrs were awesome their Fresh. Year.

Yes, Uebel is steady and has gotten stronger and Jennings nags on you worse than anyone's ignored wife.

 

Bottom line, if I am the Stangs I use Burns to board and start the break, Uebel to direct traffic and Saunders/ Trentman filling lanes.

 

Throw in they are the best defensive team I have seen and they have big chance. Depth may be an issue if Burns/Trentman get in trouble with fouls.
