Choo is a good player but does struggle vs lefties which would give the Reds the chance to get Heisey some starts which will help defensively. It will be interesting to see how he does in CF but I think the added value in the lineup will more than makeup for it. I don't think we will see Billy until September baring some kind of injury to the OF. It will give him a full year in AAA to get better with no pressure to rush him up here if he isn't ready.

No bat, can play many positions.

Great Deal. Best thing is they didn't have to give up an arm.

I love the deal. #1 is I no longer have to watch Stubbs, #2 is the fact I already liked Choo, #3 I love the way the potential lineup looks with him at the top, really putting him and Phillips 1/2 with Votto-Ludwick-Bruce there to knock them in excites me. Choo has good power as well, as someone said earlier, he could hit quite a few bombs this season.

I could see Choo hitting 20-25 bombs, with a very minimal shot at 30 with GABP's short RF porch.

 

The more I think of the lineup (Choo, BP, Votto, Ludwick, Bruce, Frazier, Cozart, Hanigan) the more I love it.

 

I'm trying to find a negative about this deal, and it just isn't there. Most people say Choo's potential defense in CF, but I would think a guy with his speed can cover enough ground, and in late game situations, they could (and most likely will) turn it over to Heisey if his defense is that big of a concern.

He's fast. Kind of struggles with ones hit in front of him. I say the same about Bruce. Great in the gap, a nightmare in the corner.

I have mixed emotions on the deal. Obviously I don't mind giving up Gregorious or Stubbs, but I'm not so sure why the Reds targeted Choo.

 

Choo is below-average defensively, so I have some concerns about asking him to play CF. I'd be inclined to move Bruce to CF, but if Choo is truly just a bridge to Hamilton, there's no sense in moving Bruce for one season only. So, Choo likely winds up in CF.

 

My concerns re: Choo are two-fold: he's obviously an improvement offensively, but he also struck out 150 times last year. More importantly, Choo batted under .200 last year against left-handed pitching.

 

All in all, I think that I like the move & I think it improves the ballclub. I'm just a bit surprised that Choo was the guy they decided to trade for, given his inability to play CF.

Hitters see starting RHP roughly 75% of the time in MLB. Who cares if he stuck out 400 times. His OBP is still .370+. Reds lead off was historically bad. (OBP% .252 next lowest was .281)

Since 2008 only 3 AL hitters have a higher OBP% than Choo....1) Mauer, 2) Miggy C. 3) Youkilis 4) Choo

How often will they see a LH reliever? Plus, Heisey's splits vs. RH/LH are backwards. He hits righties much better.

Who cares? The fact that he's had the OBP% that he has and struggles against lefties is pretty incredible if you ask me. He finds ways to get on base, and last season was an anomaly. He is roughly a .250 career hitter against lefties, which is much better than Stubbs was against anyone. :lol:

As far as seeing LH relivers, I'd say bring it on. Now with a possible (LH, RH, LH, RH, LH) lineup managers will have to use their relievers more instead of being able to simply save a lefty to face Votto and Bruce they will also have Choo to consider as well. I love it.
