I hear they are looking for ref's ,try it first then complain

We have alot of young officials in our region. Some of which seem to have been accelerated because of lack of officials to me. But we also have some fantastic officials in the region. Bobby Hall and Cary Lyle are as good as anyone, anywhere.

I officiated high school basketball for 13 years. I started at the very bottom and worked my way up the ladder, eventually working 8 district tournaments (boys and girls), 5 regional tournaments (girls) and 2 regional finals (girls). Here was my motto when I officiated: It doesn't matter if you are doing a game with the 2 worst teams in the state or a regional final, that particular game is the most important game in the state. I have a feeling that many officials working today don't have that attitude. They see a game on their schedule that features 2 teams in the bottom of their region and say, "Oh boy, that one should be fun." That attitude will not get them the games they are wanting. The coaches and players have practiced hard for these games and they deserve the very best out of the officials. Obviously some people's best is better than other people's best. Officials are not robots.

Calls will be missed, mistakes will be made, but having a positive attitude and working your hardest while on the court will help officials of ALL levels out more than anything.

 

With that being said, I would like to send my condolences to the family of the man who gave me my first high school game, Ron Dixon. Ron passed away this morning after battling cancer. RIP Mr. Dixon.

You are going to have officials make bad calls in a game. They are only human. I make bad calls in my everyday life. However, what irks me is when they do not know the rules. The official who called the "T" at the Highlands/Dixie game this year did not know what her responsibility was, nor the rule. Sad.

She was at the far end from where the ball was being taken out. It was Dixie's ball. Dixie subbed a player into the game. The kid that the sub was going in for was on the far end of the court where she was, but he was on the opposite side of the court from the scorer's table (with his back to the table). The sub walks in front of the ref and all the way over to the player, because he could not hear him, because of the noise. Taps the kid on the shoulder, says your out and asks who do you have? The kid looks down the floor, points his man out and starts walking off the floor (again, the Dixie player is walking near her). The officials at the other end are not paying attention and put the ball in play before he reaches the bench. She calls a "T" for 6 men on the floor.

 

Her responsibility was to have her hand in the air to hold the game up until the substitution was complete. She did not put her hand up at all. Of course, the Dixie coaches went bonkers (Ken was a top 20 official when he was a ref).

Yes, but the 6th kid was in the act of walking off the floor. Its not like he was staying on the floor.

 

I personally know several top 20 officials and they all say she did not do what she was responsible to do. Her hand should have been up and if they still put the ball in play, then her job was to put air in the whistle to hold things up until the substitution was complete.

Totally agree that all this could have been prevented with a hand in the air.
