November 26, 201213 yr Ya, I seemed to miss the immediate death of a family member in there in the Kevin McHale sense that I was referring to He essentially never had a Dad, that qualifies as a "tough time" to me. But I guess it doesn't meet The Scribe parameters of "tough times"...
November 26, 201213 yr In the Kevin McHale sense of the term, no. You know this how? You have no idea what others may have dealt with during their lifetime.

Raise your hand if you have ever struggled to get the right words out upon learning that someone lost their child. LeBron made an attempt. "Tough times", because it would be tough for any parent. "I bet", because it has not happened to him, but he is assuming it to be awful.
November 27, 201213 yr So growing up while missing one parent is easy? Nope. I just don't think it could be tougher than losing a child. As a father I can say the one thing that would launch me into a clinical depression would be burying my child. I can overcome any other adversity put in front of me.

November 27, 201213 yr Kinda shocked that people are finding fault with this. LeBron may say and do some stupid things, but give some credit to the guy on this one. I think it's a sincere, heartfelt message. As far as the hard times argument, I'd say LeBron recognizes the fact that he hasn't gone through something as terrible as losing a child. That doesn't mean he hasn't struggled in a big way, but it's not the same and he recognizes that. The tool move would be to act like he's been through something similar. I say props to Bron Bron for this one.

I don't think this is dissimilar from someone filing through the line in a funeral home & saying to a grieving person that the deceased "looks so peaceful" or "looks to be at peace." It's a dumb thing to say, but no ill will is intended at all.
November 27, 201213 yr Here is the story of McHale's daughter. I have a 23-yr-old daughter who I taught to play sports and am over the moon for. This hits close. Despite tremendous will, Kevin McHale's daughter Sasha loses battle with lupus - NBA - Sporting News
November 27, 201213 yr I couldn't even read the entire article. We had some scary health uncertainties a few years ago--right around this time of year--with our daughter, who was 2 1/2 at the time. Everything was cleared up & the problem identified three days before Christmas. Best Christmas gift I have ever received. Ever. My heart is absolutely broken for McHale, just like it is every time I see a parent bury a child. I can't begin to imagine the heartache.
