November 16, 201213 yr Call me a purist but I am glad Cabrera won. To me, it would have been terrible for the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years to not win the MVP. I embrace the new stats and use them a lot as I look at and evaluate players but I still wanted Cabrera to win this.

I would simply disagree with that logic.
November 16, 201213 yr IMO many are using the rarity of the event as the basis. I would simply disagree with that logic. I hear you but the facts are - Cabrera had 14 more HR's, 56 more RBI's, a better AVG, a better OBP, a better slugging percent, and a higher OPS (obviously) than Trout. Trout stole more bases and scored more runs so he deserves the award? I think Cabrera deserved it and the margin of victory is appropriate.

It is NOT simply because he scored more runs and stole more bases.
November 16, 201213 yr You've oversimplified Trout's cause. It is NOT simply because he scored more runs and stole more bases. You're right. I did oversimplify. Regardless, when you look at the core numbers I listed and consider Cabrera led in those categories, it is hard to say Trout should have won.
November 16, 201213 yr In the last two months Miggy played 39 games against the worst 5 staffs in the AL. Trout played 32 agains the TOP 5 AL staffs in the same time period. Makes a difference. He still hit .284 and SLG of .500 . OK. Not saying anything is incorrect with what you posted, but his numbers went down. August and September are weighted more heavily, I don't care what staff you are going against. We don't give A-Rod a pass for going belly-up every postseason just because the pitching is better. It is a big factor is casting votes.

November 16, 201213 yr If we're picking the best player in the league in 2012, it was clearly Mike Trout.

Of course, Cabrera is going to drive in a lot more runs. And Trout has Cabrera beat by a wide margin in areas like defense and baserunning. The MVP doesn't go to the best hitter. It's supposed to go to the best player. Personally, I'm dismayed the media made it such a rout. Trout deserved much more support.
November 16, 201213 yr Take each player off each team, evaluate where they would be. IMO, Tigers would be way worse off.
November 16, 201213 yr I think the voters got this one right. While defense and baserunning are important, historically this has been an offensive award. For whatever reason this award has also morphed to a most valuable player on a playoff team award over the years. I think that played a huge part in the vote. Since that has become an unwritten part of the criteria for the voting it makes the margin much easier to understand. If they held a Most Outstanding Player contest I think Trout takes that one easily.
