Thought this thread was going to be about the NKYFL/NFF fiasco. Talk about out of control...

I've got friends who have coached youth football and should be held up as the model coach for youth football.

 

With that said youth football draws the worst people to the coaching ranks as compared to other sports.

Insight into how the situation occurred or what the situation is in general? Honestly, I have no connection to either organization. All I know is what was on the news and what has been posted by a lot of people on FB the past few days. Based on that, I can give you a general synopsis of what happened if you want to hear.

Keep in mind, everything I know is from FB rants from NFF parents and the short news story on WLWT. I'm sure I'm missing details, so if anyone wants to fill in the gaps, feel free.

 

This, in a nutshell, is what I know:

 

Apparently, throughout the season, several NFF (Newport Firefighter) coaches were suspended. (Something about recruiting violations???) Upon suspension, these coaches were to have zero contact with parents, players, other coaches regarding NFF. As the season progressed, apparently, NFF teams were doing well despite coaching suspensions. Several teams were undefeated or only suffered one loss and each of the four NFF teams had a solid chance of winning the league's Super Bowl.

 

Playoff time rolls around.... A game time changes due to another team backing out. The head of NFF, who supposedly is one of the coaches suspended, gets an e-mail notifying him of game time changes. He proceeds to pass this info through the coaching channels. As a result of him passing along the information, all of the teams were banned from playoffs. He apparently violated rules of contact. Needless to say, NFF parents are up in arms! My FB feed is still blowing up with rants from a lot of parents about how unfair it is to punish the kids as a result of an adult's behavior. An appeal was made, but NFF lost the right to attend playoffs 7-6. The President of the NKYFL apparently coaches for Bellevue's youth team. His was the deciding vote, which of course has many NFF parents believing that his decision was clouded by the fact that now his team has a chance to participate in playoffs due to NFF's absence.

 

The whole situation has gotten some minor media attention. According to my recent FB feed, a NFF parent was just on Bill Cunningham's show explaining everything. Funny thing is, apparently after the parent got off the line, Cunningham basically said this crazy stuff only happens in hillbilly towns. That's a little sad to me, considering I am a Newport native myself. However, I gotta say...the "out of control" comment I made earlier is a result of how many of the parents have responded to the news. There's a right way and there's a wrong way to deal with injustices. And geez...the ridiculous language and threats I saw online were definitely the wrong way!!! So much for modeling appropriate behavior for their children. Teachable moments, people. Kids need to learn how to deal with adversity. This is a kind of adversity and the parents had an opportunity to model the right way to deal with it. Some parents just don't get it, and that too is, oh, so sad.

I assumed once I heard it made 700 WLW, that it was Bill Cunningham. It was probably the show you mentioned then.

Did I give a pretty good synopsis? Did I miss any major points? I'm an impartial observer outside of both organizations (NFF and NKYFL), so I feel like I gave a pretty objective overview of the situation. The only thing that made me mad is how people responded to a less than ideal situation.

Mainly centered on illegal players for the NFF's and had a team Mom and Mr. Buckler on the show. Sidenote: Don't let anything Tracy Jones says get under your skin. It's all for show.

Here's the link to the radio show call-in I referenced earlier. They start talking about it at about 1:35 in. I just listened to this for the first time. The girl that called in seemed to represent her case very well. Unfortunately, this is not the case with many of the parents who were ranting on my FB feed, however.

When we played Newport in the Tiger Bowl they didn't show much sportsmanship or class.

Key points missing...

Newport had 11 players on one team(junior) that were ineligible. They won 7 games before the suspensions.After the suspension they won the next 3 games having forfeited the last 7. They qualified for the playoffs with those three wins. Once news was heard that coacbea violated the terms of their suspension the JUNIOR division was voted to be banned from playoffs. The League VP who is also the AD of Newport HS. Let out a diatribe against NKYFL. He then told all at the meeting that if NKYFL didn't let NFF juniors in playoffs than he would pull all other divisions. The Misget and Senior squads were not sanctioned . They were pulled by their teams rep. I know this first hand.

I think this goes to add to my point in the HS thread about newport football that their are issues in Newport period. Not just with the school system.

I read where somebody said Newport had a 11 year old playing on the starters team in the Tiger Bowl. They beat South Kenton in overtime. Sounds like all the Newport teams are a mess.
