Early Leader for NKY POY?

Featured Replies

Romes and Penick are the 2 most talented players in the region. Definitely a notch above everyone else even if they do play for small schools. Romes statistics have already been posted on here so I won't go back over them other then to say he is an excellent player.

Penick is averaging over 16points and 14 rebounds (2nd in the state) has verbally commited to play Div.1 and has been invited to the Ohio-Ky All-Star. I know a few of you guys on here are constantly slamming Dan for various reasons but those who know maybe a bit more then us posters on preps seem to be very impressed with him.

Brett White from Campbell County. Outstanding numbers playing against very strong competition and having every team keying on him. He can play 1,2 or 3 with no problem.

Good question?

I think it all comes down to the tournament. Who wins? If Highlands win then it has to go to Vories. If CCH keeps rolling how can you not give it to Tierney. I don't think it goes to Romes though. The Tigers have dropped off and competition is going to hurt his votes. Same goes with Penick. I truely feel its going to come down to who does well in the regionals.

I think the injury totally blew Tierney's chances... he is tough but from an overall season perspective you cannot even consider him. Romes is dropping 30 and 40pts on people but that is because he has to. That team is not supporting him or maybe they are just sitting back and watching him as he fires em up. They have played a decent schedule for a class A school but the early District Exit with which they face in playing Holmes is not going to help him. Vories has been the most consistent all year and the fact that he will most probably lead his team to the REgional tournament and possibly a spot in the final.... this will probably make him the lead candidate. He has consistently scored and came up big in some big games this year... check Cov CAth game winner, Brossart steal to seal the deal...I am sure others..I think he dropped 29 on Lafayette.. had a great game against Bryan Station...overall against the best competition he has thrived and the team is 20-4 so that also means a lot.

In theory, you are correct. However, unlike past high-scoring D3 players, Romes' team has greatly improved and competes with the "big boys". High scorers from schools like Silver Grove have not made that claim.

To me, that's what will elevate Michael into the 1 or 2 spot.

With all due respect I'm going to disagree with you here cshs81. Beechwood has a nice little team and they have played some games with some of the bigger schools but I would have to say that this Beechwood team isn't any better then the Ludlow teams of 03/04 and 04/05. Everyone said they didn't play a tough enough schedule but if you look at some of the teams that they played I don't see that Beechwood played anyone any tougher. In those 2 years Ludlow played schools such Holmes, CCH, Holy Cross, Mason Cty, Shelby Cty, Pendleton Cty and Scott just to name a few.

In Div. III quit honestly the past 10 years have been controlled by Ludlow and Silver Grove. Beechwood is starting to fizzle out as the season wears on and they didn't even make it to the final of the Class A tourney, something Ludlow did 2 years in a row.

Beechwood loses possibly the best player in the region (Romes) along with Maricle, Sawyer and Moore so I would expect that we will see a return to the usual brand of basketball out of Beechwood.

As for Romes being Player of the Year.. He's as deserving as anyone regardless of what Div. he plays in.

I don't know about the Beechies having as big a dropoff as you think because there is talent behind the seniors, just inexperienced. Romes can't help where he plays or who his teammates are so he shouldn't be penalized because he has to score more, he should be rewarded because he can, and has the ability to drop 35 to 40 on almost anyone in NKY. IMO Romes is the best in the 9th this season, but unless Beechwood pulls an upset in the district over Holmes, he won't win, deserving or not.
