So we are in agreement that with Beechwood having to play in a very weak conference, it can potentially hurt Romes.

Romes is a quality player but the POY should go to someone that takes their team to another level, Vories does that with his exceptional play. He scores at an avg of 18pts a game, makes his teammates better with his unselfish play, gets to the rim better than anyone I have seen and has beaten some good teams so far. HHS beat Boone, St. Henry, Newport, Cov Cath, NCC all on road and Dixie in their lone home game. The meat of their schedule is coming and should give us more indication about Vories. They have dates with Lafayette (Mason Tournament-possibility of either playing South Laurel or Mason in Cons. or final), Bryan Station, Pendelton Co, Holmes, Brossart, Holy Cross and Shelby Co. If that isnt a tough schedule I don't know what is.

Last year at the Banquet they did POY for each division and then they had a 9th region player of the year.

We're debating the latter.

If Highlands keeps playing like they are right now, and makes a run at the Regional Title, how can you not consider Jeff Vories.

That is my case as well. For 9th Region POY (Senior Only), I think Vories is the man and Romes is the Runner-Up. I think if Timmy T. can get healthy and play phenomenal basketball the rest of the year that he has an outside shot of making it a 3-horse race, but I doubt he'll catch HHS' Vories.

 

I think ultimately the D-3 status will hurt a high scoring Michael Romes. There have been several high scorers at that level the last few years, and I don't recall any of them getting close to POY status.

Beechwood's schedule is not like the one played by Heritage or Calvary. I am assuming you may refer that way with the high scorers not POY candidates comment.

 

Beechwood's schedule to this point has been just as difficult as either HHS or Scott IMO. They have played Ryle, Morgan Co., Newport, Cov Cath and defending state champ So. Laurel. They do have to play the weaker conference schedule but still play NCC, Holmes, Holy Cross and Newport (again) later this year as non-conference games.

 

In that Beechwood has certainly played an aggressive schedule and Romes has taken his team where they may never have been before, I would like him as POY so far this season.

 

Kyle Howard is very good, the best post player in NKY this season (PC not included) and without him Scott is middle of the pack team. And having seen HHS play, Vories is certainly the class of that team (in more ways than one) but I still see Romes doing more for his team.

Howard is a great player but he won't be a candidate for 9th Region POY, which is what I was referring to.

 

Again, I think Romes will finish 2nd to Vories -- and that takes nothing away from the year that Michael has had. I do think, rightly or otherwise, that if you are allowed / encouraged / forced to take a majority of your team's shots, your point total should be taken with a degree of skepticism. Again, taking nothing from Michael, he is a very nice player who is ever-improving, and he deserves all of the accolades that will come his way.

I agree and that was my point with the reference to Calvary and Heritage. :thumb:

But as the thread reads "Early Leader for POY". I agree that Vories could very well take the honor as the season goes on. He certainly has a better opportunity to take his team deep into the tournament. If HHS were to win the region that certainly would be another accomplishment on his side of the ledger as well.

 

Long way to go yet before the honor is bestowed.

I am only going by what I read so no offense to Michael Romes but he seems to be an offensive machine who can take anyone to the hoop, this is also what I am hearing. The problem is he will not get the recognition because he plays for a Class A school and like it or not, it hurts him.

 

Maybe there should be a 1-1 competition at the end of the year between Vories and Romes in front of a packed house. That would be interesting.

On a side note, a little birdy told me that Michael Romes considered transferring to Highlands at some point prior to Willie Schlarman taking over and that was nixed...... Can you imagine if Romes was on the HHS team....unstoppable.....prob just a rumor but think of the lineup
