I am partial to Manual Stadium. It is the largest High School stadium in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest. Find parking on a street in Germantown, stop in at Check's, Flabby's or one of the many other eateries/neighborhood bars, and then take in a game on a chilly Friday night. I saw my first high school game there in October, 1959, and it is pretty much the same after all these years. The ghosts of so many great players over the many decades still float across the turf. Hornung, Lyons, Brohm (Oscar), Bush...In 1964 I saw my first St. X-Trinity game at Manual. In mid-October 1967 on a cold, sunny Saturday afternoon Flaget met undefeated, unscored on Owensboro at Manual Stadium. Unlike many high school stadiums that feature only one school, Manual Stadium has been the venue for classic matchups between schools other than Manual. I am told that during the 1930's U of K played there at least once.

Largest in the Commonwealth? Is it bigger than Male's Stadium? I've been to both many times and to me Male's looks bigger, but don't know the exact numbers. Male's is by far the nicer stadium, but lacks the history that Manual Stadium has.

I found the following reference to Manual Stadium at the Louisville Bulls football web page: Historic Manual Stadium, built in 1924, seats 14,000. The field has a bermuda grass surface. Parking is available inside the stadium walls (on the baseball outfield).

I did not imagine a 14K seating capacity. For some reason the figure 10,000 sticks with me for Manual Stadium, but as I age the memory neurons tend to misfire more frequently. I found a web site for marching bands that listed Maxwell Field's capacity at 8,000.

Your assertion that Male's stadium is by far the nicer is correct in that it is the newer and I feel it is one of the Commonwealth's finest. I suppose it is the ambiance, charm and history of Manual Stadium that sway me, not to mention the walking distance to the historic eateries/bars in Germantown.

Amen

Amen

When I lived in Mexico I played in the national flag football tournament in Can Cun for the state of Yucatan (I was finally all-state, ha ha). The stadium and field weren't good, but we played in Can Cun so that gets my vote over Newport Stadium and Highlands.

In Northern Kentucky, Campbell County's stadium is the best to watch a game at. Id say even the best to play at.

Except for the light polls that tend to obstruct your view.

Trinity's new Stadium

Ryle

Highlands

Scott Co.

Boone (so i'm partial)

WOW 14,000. Thats a lot. Next time I go to Manual Stadium I'll pay more attention to see how big their stands are. That is by far the biggest, that I know of, in the Commonwealth. I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day about Male and Manual stadiums and we came to this... Male's stadium is like Great American Ballpark, newer and more nice and good sized. Manual Stadium is like Wrigley Field, it has all the history in the world at that place. Not the nicest ever but very historic. Both places are great in their own ways.

The PIT at Elder High School. Never played under better atmostphere and missed getting a win there by 12 inches to the right. You get to play in front of 12,000 people and having 11 of those 12 wanting you to lose is a bit unsettling. Plus, they just put in FieldTurf so your playing on IMO the best surface available. I bet many colleges wish they had something close to that stadium.

Maybe when it was built it had 14k, but I know that they took out a section of bleachers at the end of the field at some point in its history.

Henry R Evans Field down at Russell. Really tough place to play and even tougher to win there. I like how they do things down there for Russell games they do it all good.

Love Beechwoods Turf that stuff is awesome.

I always like playing at Danville b/c of the Tradition there. Bell Co was fun if you wanted to play a football game then fight the refs after the game.

Boyle Co great field and awesome fans it made for a great atmosphere.

Enjoyed playing at South Laurel but only because there was great Scenery to look at and I am not talking about the Hills or country side!! :thumb:

Of course no place like home SW!

It just never ends does it....... that could probably be said of alot of schools..... but Bell gets the beat down.

Dont mention the fact that Bell's stadium is carved out of a mountain side and sits beautifully on top of Log Mountain surrounded by trees and nature.... or the fact that the stands are newly furnished.... or the fact that a beautiful track surrounds the field..... or that the field (at least early in the season) is in as great a shape as any field in SE KY and painted very nicely...... or the fact that the fans make the atmosphere that much better with all of them decked out in blue and white and welding the good ole cow bells and gallon jug penny shakers..... or that the stadium has some of the best nicknames around (Log Mountain, The Hilton Hotel, etc etc.)..... or that the etc etc etc

Must I go on! :D

Re: Centuriondawg-Excellent baseball analogy. Two great stadiums, and utilized by three excellent "home" teams!

Re: ram2003-Indeed, you are accurate in that it was much larger when it was originally built. In fact, I am told that it originally was a bowl. There were seats at both ends of the stadium. I still remember the seats at the back end of the stadium away from the scoreboard. Eventually, they fell into disrepair, and were finally torn down.

Centuriondawg, although the Web reference I cited above claimed 14,000 I do not believe that this number is accurate. If anybody gets an accurate figure on the seating capacity of Manual Stadium, it would be nice to see it posted.

By the way, to shift gears for a moment, I have only been to Trinity's new stadium once but was impressed. Centuriondawg, you have expressed more of a preference for newer stadiums. Have you seen Trinity's new stadium? If so, your thoughts?

I also must add a new place to this list: Troy, OH. My fiance is from Troy and we got to see a game this year and their stadium was awesome. This is a great place to see a game.

I agree with you 100%!

Diogenes....

No I haven't been to Trinity's new stadium. I live not 3 minutes from it and have only driven by it before. From the road it looks nice. Compared to the other stadiums around town, it probably has the best surface with the sportsturf. The only thing I can't tell is how many seat do they have. I remember the stadium before they re-did it and the visitors side wasn't very nice and didn't have many seats. Did they do anything about that? I'll have to check a game out there next year.
