What if there aren't tools for everyone to use but a majority have a cellphone? Not every school can afford iMacs, iPads, laptops, etc. for the whole class.

 

I don't see a downside to having cellphones in the class.

 

Your last 2 posts are arguments we were given in favor of the cellphones.

The students using the wireless system in the building is under direct district supervision, certain sites blocked and usage limited.

 

That's a great start to the experiment. The ability to keep websites blocked and usage limited is a way to control what is going on with the phones. Those that text will never stop but those students that are engaged in learning will appreciate the use of the cellphone as a learning tool.

I do not support any school that says cell phones have to be kept in lockers.

 

 

So explain to me again why a child needs (we are talking HS/grade aren't we?) a cell phone in his or her possession at all times! If mommy or daddy needs to speak to the child during school time, then call the school! There are enough distraction in a classroom on a daily basic and having phones go off or students checking then, is one that can be stopped easily. BTW you obviously don't work in a factory or a work site where you aren't allowed to take personal phone calls during working hours!

 

I mean Clyde, would it be okay with you, if your child's teacher stopped teaching to make phone calls daily, or while getting your car fixed the mechanic was on the phone while trying to install your new brakes talking to his neighbor, or the airline pilot while taking off was on the phone talking to his wife about where to go to dinner that night.

 

Please, schools, businesses have reasons for not allowing students, employees to carry their phones while working because they have learned that the students and employees will use them instead of doing what they are suppose to be doing!

 

BTW at least back when my daughter attended NDA, you had to leave your phone in your locker!

If we want our students to have a one to one ration with computers, it is the most feasible and inexpensive way to make that happen since they have them in their pockets. Not to mention, when kids are using technology on a daily basis, there are reduced discipline issues and dropout rates. Grades and test scores rise when students are engaged, and technology is the prime way to effectively engage every student.

I can call the day care to speak to her but she/they are not allowed to carry their phones with them, as the children parents, you know the ones that pay her wages, like her spending her time watching/working/teaching their children and not talking on the phone!

None of what you say has anything to do with why I say phones should be allowed on the student in the classroom.

 

Why do we assume a student would pull out their phone in class and call someone? How many times would that have to happen before the teacher fixed that problem? ONCE.

Her intent is correct especially if it's an issue of a school not being able to afford technology. I have no clue how many schools do not have enough computers for students.

 

IMO it's still not worth the loss of control by the teacher.

It seems pretty simple unless a principal doesnt think the teacher can control the classroom and if that's the case they need a new teacher.
