I understand the law and why they're bring strict, but let's all be honest here....$10,000 is a bit ridiculous.

Why is it ridiculous?

I have no problem with the fine, only wish they would include attempted arson as a charge as well. Ive seen someone throw a lite cigarette out and as i was driving past that spot 10 mins later the hillside was on fire, this summer is even a higher risk.

 

Are some people allowed to throw cigarettes out the window and not others? If not, then everyone IS being treated equally in this case.

Everyone is treated equally. If you though out a cig you get a $10,000 fine. If I throw out a cig I get a $10,000 fine. If TB&G throws out a cig she gets a $10,000 fine. See how that works.

Stealing $100 is stealing, stealing $1000 is stealing. Ones a felony and one isn't.

Add the amount of money needed to fight the fire and the possible loss of life (human - animals always die in wildfires) and it is an awful thing. Was that fire started by a cigarette? Very true. The problem is that in some cases only the person doing the tossing knows if it was lit when he/she tossed it.

How did I know that answer was coming from you? $10,000 is a ridiculous amount of money. I understand it can cause a lot of damage, but so can you driving your own car. You could wreck your car, it could blow up and start a fire. If speeding is about $150 bucks, how can you justify flicking a cigarette butt is $10,000.

I don't have to justify it but like I said before, I can give one quick tip for smokers to save $10,000. Don't throw your nasty cig out the window. Keep it in your car.

I can tell you for a fact, that after running the Commonwealth of Kentucky Rest Areas in Boone County and now cleaning some Boone County Parks, that the one single biggest peice of trash we pick up daily are cigarette butts! Nothing and I mean nothing else in the line of trash is even close to the amount of butts we pick up daily.

 

The thing that kills me about the number of butts we pick up, is I honestly don't think the majority of smokers realize they are doing it, as I just don't think the majority would even think of just throwing out the window a empty can of pop, or throwing a can or bottle on the ground!

Setting fires is usually an accident too. You think people that flick cigarettes are trying to start grass fires? Speeding in your car is against the law, so if you wreck from going too fast, charge someone 10,000 extra dollars because it "could have" started a fire...? Doesn't make sense to charge someone more than a simple littering fine for it, which are already usually hefty.
