Rowan County 74 Elliott County 58

Vikings get big win vs. Lions tonight. Jared Hitch with 17 points, 16 rebounds to pace the Vikes.

This may be a payback for last season when Elliott dropped a 14 pt. loss on the eventual region champions. This is a shocker! Anyone have details on this game?

Elliott has played a lot of games lately, but this just shows how young and dangerous Elliott can be. Morgan or whichever other 16th team can't necessarily expect a close game from them, but you certainly can't overlook them either. Elliott is capable of losing to almost any team and also of beating them. This inconsistency is what makes them so dangerous. You just have to approach them as if they were the region favorites and play hard for the whole game!

Congrats to the Vikings! They can spring up for a win from time to time too this year!

I was at the game and I actually feel like Elliott is the better team - or at least they have the potential to be the better team. They outplayed Rowan for most of the 2nd half, but they were absolutely horrible in the 1st. There was a crucial part of the 2nd half when Elliott was about to get over the hump and make a game of it and the taller, dark-haired (I think this name was Coldiron) ref made the worst call that I've seen this season. He took away an exciting bucket and a foul (which was called by the other ref) by running in from the other end of the court and calling a walk (which did not happen). That kind of took the wind out of Elliott's sails. For the record, Elliott's "coach" sat motionless on the bench during that play and several other plays that were simply pathetic in the 2nd half. Most coaches would have been tossed from the game before the horn sounded. This particular officiating crew is by far the worst I've ever seen in a long time. For the record, I am a fan of both Rowan and Elliott, so I'm not hating on either team. When they play each other, I cheer for Elliott because I have family on the team - but I live in Morehead and cheer for the Vikings every other night.

A few other quick notes:

- Daniels from Rowan is a good player in this region - but Rowan will struggle in games when he is slowed down

- Ferguson and the Faulkner twins are going to make some noise in the 16th region for several more years to come

- When Elliott's players get focused and work as a real team, they are very difficult to defend - they struggle when they play like 5 individuals and they are awesome when they play like 1 team

- I still feel like both of these teams should make the regional tournament

- In my opinion, these refs should check into football - because they sure as heck don't know anything about basketball - I mean, who keeps an eye on these guys? Surely, there isn't such a shortage of referees that we have to rely on morons to officiate...

Elliott shot 22.6% from the field, and only 61.5% from the stripe. they may have looked alittle selfish but i think that was brought on by being frustrated, and trying to get their team back in the game!! Overall they play pretty good team ball!!

Elliott will bounce back.As far as Rowan is concerned they are much better than their record indicates. Most of their losses have been single digits. If they ever find an inside game(sounds like they did tonight) they will be formidable.

Elliott laid a real stinker and Rowan played well and took advantage. Elliott stood around on offense and defense and tried to play one-on-one the whole night. Rowan played good team defense and stopped penetration most of the game. As long as Elliott allows Weddington to played outside the three point line they will not win against even average teams as they cannot get a rebound. Weddington is an excellent rebounder and passer if the coaches can get him to do it. If they cannot, it may be time to give another youngster some playing time.

Weddington has played outside the three point line most of the season and the lions did fine. The problem is after he began starting his decision making has went way downhill and is not very team oriented! I dont know about the "cannot get a rebound" part because he (Weddington) had 9 last night and Ferguson had 11. I will also say, and this is just my own opinion, that they play better with Ethan Faulkner running the point and Weddington helping him and Evan get the ball down the floor. I hope for the teams sake that they can work it out because they are great when they are playing together and fired up. I also agree with you Bogey its time for THE COACHES to step in!!!

KY Hoopster - I don't want you to feel like I'm trying to dog Elliott County. They are my favorite team - my brother-in-law plays for Elliott County. What I meant when I said they were playing selfish is that they were trying to do a little too much one-on-one and not looking for the open guys. I saw countless opportunities in this game to kick it out to an open shooter, but they forced up a difficult fadeaway or turned it over. Also, they put one of the Faulkners on Daniels and he was getting frustrated and tired because the smaller, faster player was all over him. For whatever reason, once this started working, it was decided to put Weddington back on him. Elliott has some good players on the team but they have no leadership. They are like a team on the local playground or something. Also, whenever Weddington gets his head in the game, he can drive to the hole on pretty much anyone and either score or get fouled.

Coaches need to step in and step in quickly. Please take care of the 1 on 3 with good shooters open on the wings. They need to realize that if the kick it out and they score it will only help with penatration. Someone needs to take control of this team and get in some faces.

Bandit29 - have you ever seen Elliott's coach get in anyone's face? I've been watching them for 5 years now and I'm not sure I've ever heard him speak. There were screams from the crowd last night, and I quote "Say something to that ref coach...." There were more, but those are the ones I remember. I disagree with cursing at your young players and acting like a complete idiot, but I've never seen anyone just sit there in high school basketball.

Wireman, Coach Mays does say things to officials, just most of the time not like an idiot, however, there can be an assisant that could straighten things out.

Bandit - I'm sorry, but Elliott has had a lot of talented players go through the program throughout the years and they have always ended up losting. The trend is that they always start out 10-2 or 15-4 and then the train derails and they end up closer to .500. I won't trash their coach because he seems like a good guy and he has been around the game for a long time - I'm just saying that something should have been said the other night and it wasn't.
