What does Mayfield need to do to improve in 2012? What do they need to keep doing to be successful? Remember, please be constructive.

#1- injuries- last season Mayfield lost 3 full time starters going into the State Championship game plus Jackson and Scott were not at full speed.(Hazard was a deserving Champion)

 

#2- keep getting better as the season moves on.

 

I think with what Mayfield has returning and as long as nothing goes haywire, I put them as the team to beat in 1A.

Who are the key players that graduated and who is coming back?

Key losses (from the team that played Hazard) ... William Higginson (best WR-DB), Louis Love (big-play WR), Shain Ross (all-WKC LB). Best OL was hurt and out that game, and it sure seemed to be a big loss.

 

Also ... star DE LaBront Scott had moved to Murray and was ruled eligible there, but word is he may be moving back to Mayfield.

It's late so I will have to take a stab at this tommrow in more detail. We lost 6 on offense and 5 on defense but 1st team DE LaBront Scott has moved for now so I will call it 6 on defense as well. Key starters lost to graduation on offense were Austin Wynn at tackle, Seth Clifton at guard, Connor Tracey at guard, William Higginson at wide reciever Shain Ross at fullback and Louis LOve at wide reciever. Key starters lost on defense include Shain Ross at LB, Seth Clifton line, Connor Tracey Line, William Higginson DB, Louis Love DB and LaBront Scott DE (moved to Murray). THe Cards also lost Josh Hughes who moved but would have started this year though he did not start last year.

The Cards will be set and deep in the backfield with Jonathan Jackson leading the way and Guhy at QB. Up front the Cards will get back Jay McAlpin who started at center last year until a season ending injury midway through the year. Kyle Downing will likely take up a spot on the offensive line and Sullivan returns at guard. The wide outs will see Jordon Brown return but the other 2 recievers are still a mystery to me though there are several decent prospects to insert. So on offense the holes to fill will be 1 or 2 linemen and a couple of wide outs. Ther rest of the offense should be in pretty good shape. The excellent kicking and punting duo return. On defense the Cards lost Austin Wynn and Connor Tracey on the line and Shane Ross at LB. They also lost DB William Higginson and Micah Jackson. DE LaBront Scott moved. Stewart Mills, who was lost for the year aearly on agaisnt PT is back, and should be a excellent replacement for Shain Ross at LB and the other 2 LB's both return one of which is Jonathan Jackson, who maybe the best LB Mayfield has ever had. The other defensive holes to fill are 2 spots on the line and I have no idea who that will be and 2 DB who it is unclear to me who will step up there but this is a area where we have several quality athlets to shore up the DB's and Sevic returns back there. Sevic missed mpst of ;ast year after going down in the Tilghman game. The loss of first team all state DE LaBront Scott will be hard to fill and I have no idea who will step in at DB.

 

Overall, there are some holes to fill but this is an above average talent group and their chances at a title are better than most years if they can get the line squared away on both sides of the ball. Jonathan Jackson will likely be the best player in class A this year which will help

Can't disagree on Jackson's talent. He will be one of the best players in Kentucky let alone Class A. If Beechwood and Mayfield meet in November the Jackson / Max Nussbaum matchup could be one for the ages.

You can't replace that. losing Hughes won't even be noticed, the quarter-back job is Guys, and Hughes did not help on defense.I expect Stuart mills will have a big year, he's small, but brings everything he's got! My biggest worries are the defensive secondary and offensive line.

Given the antics of Scott I would rather he not be a Cardinal even it it cost us wins on the field. Sometimes it is better to lose right than win wrong and I think that is where this is at. State titles are great but not at the price of overlooking wrongs. A fresh start elsewhere for Scott I also think is best for him in preparing for the next level.

 

Even without him I think we will be okay. I think we still have enough to win it if we can survive the triple threat backfield up in NKY. rookie I am also looking for big things out of Tyler kid who looked the part last year as a frosh.

Toothpick I agree with you on his antics being a cancer to the team. I was hoping that someone would get a hold of him and maybe get him on the right track. Had that been accomplished, he's a kid and I believe should be entitled a second chance. Hopefully he will get his life straightened out, but it is still a huge loss to us, and I believe to him as well. I'm obviously speaking of Scott, my phone wouldn't let respond with your quote.
