June 13, 201214 yr I am going to throw something crazy out there! Back when baseball was first started your worst hitter batted 9th and it was usually your pitcher, but in today's game with the use of relief pitchers the pitcher doesn't bat 4 times a game like everyone else. I also would state that based on pinch hitters and matchups you could argue that guys that are on the bench when the game starts might actually be better than guys you have in the line-up batting 7th or 8th. So i have come up with a new line-up for the Reds: Votto Phillips Bruce Frazier Stubbs Heisey Pitcher Hanigan Cozart My basis on this is Votto, Phillips and Bruce are the 3 best hitters on the team. They get the most at-bats this way! How many times have people talked about not stealing with Votto at the plate because you don't want to take the bat out of his hand. This allows Phillips, Stubbs, and Heisey to run every time they are on base without taking the bat out of his hands! Also, Hanigan has a higher On Base percentage than our current leadoff hitters and Cozart will see fastballs still hitting in front of Votto. Tell me what you think.

June 13, 201214 yr Hanigan and Frazier are better hitters than Bruce and Phillips. Hanigan has 1 HR and 6 RBI in the middle of June. He is not a better hitter.
June 13, 201214 yr Hanigan and Frazier are better hitters than Bruce and Phillips. So now Hanigan is a better hitter than Bruce as well? Did you meet Bruce and he spit on you or something? Did he get on one of his hot streaks on a week you had to face him in a H2H fantasy league? What did he do to get you to this point?
June 13, 201214 yr What does everyone think about hitting Votto first? It's insane to think putting your best hitter and best hitter in baseball with RISP should be hitting lead off.
June 13, 201214 yr It's insane to think putting your best hitter and best hitter in baseball with RISP should be hitting lead off. It's also insane to put your second best OBP batting 8th on a consistent basis. But that's Dusty............
June 13, 201214 yr It's also insane to put your second best OBP batting 8th on a consistent basis. But that's Dusty............ It's not that insane when he is the slowest player on the team and only played 3 or 4 days a week. I was an advocate for Hanigan hitting 2nd a while back but it's not going to happen.
June 14, 201214 yr Author It's insane to think putting your best hitter and best hitter in baseball with RISP should be hitting lead off. He would only hit leadoff the first time through the line-up! Besides on the OBP of our 1st 2 hitters is awful. If he is batting first with Hanigan 8th and Heisey 9th, their OBP would be better that Cozart 1st and Stubbs 2nd as we see every day now!!!
June 14, 201214 yr So you handicap your lineup through the first 2 innings at least. If they go 3 up and 3 down all 3 times Votto leads off again.
June 14, 201214 yr Author So you handicap your lineup through the first 2 innings at least. If they go 3 up and 3 down all 3 times Votto leads off again. How is it handicapping your line-up? Your 3 best hitters hit in the first inning, that has to be a benefit. How many times this year has 1 and 2 hitters got out and Votto comes up with no one on base anyway? Also, i would argue there is nothing more frustrating than your best hitters getting split up between innings. What i mean is 2 outs, Votto comes up - walked, Phillips gets out and now Bruce leads off the next inning with no one on base. I would argue that guaranteeing that your 3 best hitters hit in the same inning would give you more opportunities to score runs in the first inning. Also, how many times have you heard about pitchers struggling in the 1st inning until they find themselves. This puts your best right at the top!
June 14, 201214 yr Author That is a little league style lineup. There is more runs scored in Little League!
