Best by Position All-Time

Featured Replies

Who are the best players 1-5 by position in NBA history. Not how they would fit on the team, but the best Point, Shooting Guard, Small Forward, Power Forward and Center of all time? My best friend and I were discussing this yesterday and we had a consensus for the point and 2 guard....but the 3, 4 and 5 wow that's pretty tough?

So let's hear it who you got? No playing out of position, got to keep them at the spot they played the majority of their career. This isn't your favorite player but the best ever in your opinion.

Point G....Magic

Shooting G....Jordan

Is there really any discussion on these first two? The Big O?....Maybe? Kobe?...nah He's great but Mike's better All-Time!

Small...Bird...could argue for many here but Bird was a natural born killer. BTW Doc is my All-Time Favorite player...but Bird was better.

Power...Tim Duncan...over Karl Malone and KG and I love KG!

Center...Wilt...not the most rings but most dominate player in history...imo. Russel, Kareem, Hakeem, Shaq for about 4 years...even Moses could be considered.

I agree with all but maybe PF and part of that is that Popovich recently said that it's a myth that TD is a power forward and he has always been a center.

Good call on Wilt.

Toughest call I made was on Duncan for the reasons you said, tough to define his position.

If we are not counting TD as a PF I would lean towards Barkley.

I could go with Chuck, I hated him at Auburn...but the day the Sixers drafted him I loved him. Even had to get the same Air Force Ones he wore....thought the Jordan Dunks were ugly!!!

I've always though of TD as a PF so I'd stick with that.

It's hard to go all-time because (at age 31) I can only truly comment on the guys I've watched. So in my lifetime I'll go:

PG Magic

SG Jordan

SF Bird

PF Duncan

C Hakeem

PG-Magic

SG-Kobe(just kidding....it's MJ but I had to put Kobe there even if it is out of spite)

SF-Bird

PF-Duncan-he was PF when David Robinson was there wasn't he?

C-Bill Russell

I can be persuaded to change it. I'm listening.

In the Russell camp for C.

Anyone read Simmons Book of Basketball? He had an interesting rankings list. If you like Simmons and you like NBA basketball, pick it up.

Two weeks ago, before Game 1 of the series against the Jazz, Popovich was asked whom he'd be starting at center, and he answered, "Tim Duncan, like we have for the last 15 years." And thus the lamest ruse in recent NBA history finally came to an end. After two decades of being called a power forward, of showing up on All-Star ballots as a power forward, of engendering debate about whether he's already the greatest ever at the four, the Spurs have come clean. Tim Duncan's a center. Always has been.

TIM DUNCAN is the most successful player of his - 05.21.12 - SI Vault

Are we doing Best 5 to make the best team, or just the best 5 at their position all time?

This is my All not so obvious NBA team and then I will give you the usual suspects.

PG- John Stockton (Pasty could deal the rock)

SG- George Gervin

SF-James Worthy

PF-Charles Barkley

C- Bill Russell

My All Time NBA team if I could pick em.

PG- Magic

SG- Jordan

SF-Bird

PF- Karl Malone

C- Wilt the Stilt

I just think that Wilt was the single most dominant player in history. Russell was incredible as well, but if you put Wilt on those Celtics teams then he has all the rings and Russell doesn't. Wilt led the league in points and rebounds (nearly every year) and even led in assist one year.
