You and I are in total agreement on that one HT721. Unfortunately the SBC will slip into an abyss of in-fighting. I lived through the "Holy War" of the 80's and have since disassociated myself from them. First the problem was "the liberals are . . . " Then the war was over being in lockstep with the hierarchy. Now it's the Calvinism vs. Free Will debate. These guys have to have a demon or enemy to fight with or they will make one up to satisfy their "cause."

That is kind of what it means to be baptist. Initially it was the autonomy of the local church, among other things of course, but autonomy was the big thing.

Somewhat yes, supporting missionaries was a big one for the southern baptist convention, well that and slavery but no one wants to admit it. When the triennial baptist convention split up and the Southern Baptist were formed the final straw between northern and southern baptist churches was about supporting missionaries. Slavery had always been a hot button issue between the two but the south's desire to sponsor missionaries ultimately was the last straw that broke the camels back so to speak.

The Slavery issue was huge because of the question whether a missionary could have slaves. James Reave was nominated by Georgia Baptists as a Home Missionary but his ownership of slaves was the reason he was submitted by Georgians. Alabamians likewise asked the Foreign Missionary Board if slave owners could be appointed. The responses were not positive for Southern Baptists and they began to gather and form the SBC in 1845. Leon McBeth is the best Baptist History source I've ever seen. "The Baptist Heritage."

Hey Hatz, when most people think of John Calvin, they think of predestination, that it was predetermined whether you would receive salvation or damnation even before you were conceived. I know Calvinists today don't believe that. Could you give the Cliff Notes, Calvinism for Dummies version of modern Calvinism?
