An 18-year old Oldham Co. boy is in trouble for throwing a soda can at a school bus. He has been charged with wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, assault and criminal littering.

 

One thought is that this was a very stupid prank and I'm sure he didn't intend to bust the windshield or harm anyone. That being said, felony charges seem a little harsh.

 

My other thought: if things back in the day were like they are these days, I truly believe most of the people I grew up with would be felons, including myself.

I was on 2 different buses that were rocked after ball games and nothing ever came of it. It scared me pretty good, but I would not say those people were felons.

When you are young, you don't think it could hurt others. Remember at 18 you are invincible!

I would have been a felon too or at least spent a little time with Wireman in Juvenile detention centers.

What if the bus had crashed and killed 4 or 5 people? Still not felons? Just practical jokers?

Wire, Wanton Endangerment 1st is the proper charge in my opinion and it is a felony.

 

I would like to know if the can was empty and/or how much liquid was in it. If it was full the felony is absolutely the correct charge because it is more dangerous and it proves intent. However, if it was empty this could have just been an irresponsible case of littering and throwing the can out the window at the wrong time and then I don't believe a felony is the right charge.

Obviously a full soda can is heavier, easier to throw, and can cause more damage. What would be the purpose of throwing a full can of soda at a school bus other than to do damage?

I'm not condoning the kid's behavior. I'm just saying, it's a shame to see a young man be strapped with a felony charge for however long (if not forever) because he was trying to be cool and threw a can at a school bus on the last day of school.

 

Yes I've done plenty of things that were wrong, dangerous and just plain stupid. I'm not afraid to admit that. I have corned cars before on Halloween...pretty much the same thing. It seemed funny at the time but I now realize it was wrong and stupid. But, I don't feel I earned a felony for that behavior.
